2006 clutch problem?

Talking about a 2006, V6. After driving on the freeway for 20 or so miles home from work, exit the off-ramp, depress the clutch, there is so much free travel on the clutch it almost hits the floor before there's resistance and I can shift. After a few gear shifts in city traffic, the resistance comes back and the feel of the clutch is back to normal. This happens everytime I drive on the freeway. I get the feeling something is about to go out on me. The car has 90K miles and I don't believe ever had clutch work. Can anyone describe to me what the car is experiencing and the best way to fix it, other than running to the dealer? Thanks in advance for the advice!

I had the same problem in my '02 Jeep Wrangler. The reason this happens is from either normal wear and tear and the rod and bearing is just deteriorating or from riding the clutch depending on its life. The best thing you can do is take it in to a shop and let them know this happens. I'm almost 100% sure you will have to replace a few clutch components such as the rod. If you wait to long, like I did, you will not be able to shift at all. Luckily I was parked when it finally gave out but I recommend you take it in immediately to any local shop you use.

Re: 2006 clutch problem?

Well, decided to take it into dealer before I get stuck somewhere. $1600 to replace the clutch assembly and all related components. I know it has 90K miles but everything is bad...Charged me $100 just to diagnose the problem and that doesn't even get applied to the cost of the fix. My bad on that one for not asking ahead of time, live and learn. I feel a second opinion coming.

Hmm, I think he may have over charged a bit. I only had to fork out about $1100 and I didn't have to pay for them just looking at what it is because it was such a straight shot issue and they knew what it was the minute they tried to push the clutch in.

Re: 2006 clutch problem?

For any interested parties, always get a 2nd opinion. The mechanic shop who fixes our University fleet vehicles took a look and diagnosed the car's problem...for free. They didn't feel it was the clutch assembly because it was only an intermittent issue, if it was the assembly it would be a consistent problem. They felt it was a master/slave cylinder issue or air in the line. Long story short, they didn't jump to the most expensive, over the top solution like the dealer's mechanics, and it turned out the cylinders were the issue and I didn't have to drop a fortune to have it fixed.
