RPM gauge not working. Price quote

So my rpm gauge just points and moves around randomly. I drive a 2005 V6 manual tranny with just under 100k miles. The dealership wants $60 just to find out what's wrong and I'm not sure how much it will be to fix it and I was wondering if this happened to anyone else and how much it should cost?

They sell the stepper motors for around $5-$10 each on ebay, I got 3 that don't work. As long as my speed works ill replace all four of mine. They have a 2 youtube videos on changing them, you'll save at least $300 if you do it yourself

The dealer just called. They said: The reason I'm having problems with the steppers is because the alternator is giving out an abnormal voltage. The alternator should be covered under warranty so I'll have them replace that and then do the motors myself.

It makes sense. I've heard that the 05 and 06 have a lot of problems with electronics. An alternator putting out higher than normal voltages would surely cause issues with anything electrical in the car. What do you guys think? Think they are just trying to squeeze some money out?

After the alternator was replaced I have not had a single issue with any of my stepper motors.

Instead of replacing your steppers I would suggest you have your alternator checked. It's better to fix the root cause instead of continuing to replace steppers over and over again. Besides that, a bad alternator can screw up a lot more than just your steppers.

I didn't replace my motors. I only replaced the alternator. Haven't had an issue with the motors since.

I bought a reconditioned cluster for 100$. They send yours off and you get one in replace. Its a little more but it has a lifetime warranty and i know its correct.

And its really easy ro do. The chrome trim just pulls straight out. There is 4 screws that are maybe a 3/16 head. The wires unclip. Then reverse order.
