i usually stick to the 50k mile mark of most major fluid changes (like a rear flush and fill and trans fluid swap)

although i missed that mark on my current stang and just hit 57k..im holding off till spring on mine because i'm doing a jmod.

btw for checking it...if its an auto sadly you don't get a dipstick (thanks ford)..

as for actually changing it. if it's a 5 speed at least in my old GT ('04) the easiest way to fill it was by pull the shifter out and pouring into the top of the trans. i don't know if s197s can do the same

How to do on my 06 manual tranny.

Suppose my Chiltons Guide will say...

My car had 34,xxx miles on it when I bought it this past February. The first thing I did was change all the fluids over to synthetic. I used Royal Purple for the engine (5W-20) and rear diff (75W-90). I tried Royal Purple Synchromax but the tranny synchros did not like it and made it hard to shift, so I switched to Mobil 1 ATF (one of the fluids recommended). The primary recommendation is Dexron III/Mercon Non-Synthetic ATF.

Other member should chime in if you have an auto tranny.

There's a bolt you take out and stick your finger In lol on the tranny itself

If your just doing a filter and refill,,I would do it now,,If you drive her hard I would change the fluid around 30000,,your only taking out about 5,, 6 quarts,,so I would change it more often,,
