Ball Joint Question

I was told recently that I need to replace the ball joint on our V6. My manual says that the ball joint and control arm are to be replaced as an assembly. After looking online, I have found separate parts, ball joint and control arms. My question is, if it has to be replaced as a unit, why would they sell them separately? Also, can the ball joint be replaced by itself? My wife is freaking out about the $150 price tag. I searched the forum and didn't find the answer.
