Problem filling car with fuel

I have a 2005 V6 convertible that about 75% of the time is a pain in the neck when trying to put fuel in it. The pump will keep clicking off until I end up holding the fill nozzle at about a 90 degree angle and let it just barely drizzle in. Sometimes it takes me 15 minutes just to fill it. It is all very inconsistent between pumps, weather, etc. Anyone else have this problem? Solution?

I had a similar problem with my explorer, it ended up being a purge valve that Lernout excessive air pressure while filling. Cleaned the valve and no issues sense.

Is the little flap still in the top of the fuel filler on yours? I ask because I had a similar problem last week. Filling up was almost impossible and I noticed the little flap was missing. Figured it was blocking the tube, pulled the filler tube and it wasn't there, felt inside the gas tank opening, pushed in on the check valve there and heard a plop as the plate fell into my tank (where it will stay, lol). Havn't had trouble since.

Yep on cars getting older the flapper will stick. If its sticky you can start filling really slowly and try to increase the flow gradually to get it to pop open. Not sure I would want a piece of flapper floating around in there like above but its probably not going to hurt anything. Permafix is to drop the tank and pull the fill neck and replace the flapper.

Pretty sure my flapper is fine so I think it might be the fuel pressure sensor as mentioned previously. Good idea to check it though...

Dang it I thought I posted in here but sometimes the app messes up.

Ford put a TSB out on this. I think the remedy is to replace the connecting hose neck from the tank to the (filler inlet) not quite sure what they call it.

Some people have said turning the pump upside down is better.

I thought I was the only one that looked dumb for fueling with the nozzle upside down.. How big are your tanks? Mine stops at 12. I've heard it should be 16.

It will fill to 16 gallons but it just takes a long time because of the fill issue.

Yeah not doing that. Just went on unemployment. I don't have income anymore. I'll stick to a 12 gallon tank I guess.
