Oil Lifter Problems?

I'm wondering, what is the best way to clean out oil lifters? I have this very annoying ticking noise and it started a few days ago. I first assumed it was a exhaust leak on the manifold, but was sadly wrong. So now I've come to the conclusion it is the lifters and am hoping they are just dirty and need help flushing out some grim. Hopefully they aren't bad or need adjustment.
