How often do you check your lamps?
Maybe one burnt out, then the other, but you didn't notice until you lost them both. It's not very likely they both blew at the same time, but not impossible either.

When you say "inner two brake lights" are you meaning when you step on the brakes they don't illuminate? But otherwise they are lit with the headlights switch?

If so, I believe that is normal and only the outer bulbs light with the brakes and turn signals

They're not supposed to light up when you hit the brakes. As Jim said, they light up when your headlight switch is on.

hello everybody thanks for getting back. here is how this started. had the airbag replaced at the dealer on Saturday. you know how they come back you got this problem that one. that's when they said two brake light bulbs out . I said I will fix that. I replaced both bulbs same thing . with headlights on all lit up and when I press brake inner two don't go brighter. I thought this was a little strange. driving home today from work I saw another mustang and saw the brake lights are the the same as mine. after your replies I am assuming that this is normal. teck at dealer not up to speed on this one. lol thanks for your replies.

Try swapping bulbs; turn the hazards on...

Mine didn't light up until I put the sequential harness on my car.

Since you already checked the lamps, I would pull the whole harness out and reinstall your original harness and see if the lamps start working again. Well, except for the inner most lamp.
