No spare tire!

The only thing I don't like about the 2011 mustang is that they don't come with a spare tire. They just give you a crappy inflation kit that is gonna be useless if you have a hole in your tire. Any thoughts?

My car is a 06 and it has a spare it is good to know it's there just in case and I don't see why they decided to delete the spare tires in the first place.

Re: No spare tire!

You know I didn't mind it too much at first but now I have a tire that is on the edge of blowing out(I had to drive my car today otherwise it wouldn't be driven like that) and I was worried about it the whole time...I mean Ford will come out and put a new one on but...that takes a long....long time!!!!!

Re: No spare tire!

Is there a well down there where a tire can go? If there is then buy a steel wheel there only about 80 bucks a jack at walmart is about 25 and tire iron is somwhere close to that. And presto you got a spare tire.

Yeah it has a tire well. And that is exactly what I am going to do. It just irritates me that Ford gives you a useless inflation kit instead of a spare. If you have a hole in your tire, you can't inflate it!

Re: No spare tire!

Does anyone know if a standard tire will fit the tire well or is just big enough for a donut?

Re: No spare tire!

Same situation here JMEIGS...

We just bought a 2011 in Blaze Yellow...love teh car so far, but no spare tire.

Ford says its perfectly safe to use the included "Tire Mobility Kit".

Yeah, and then you have to replace the pressure sensor in addition to the tire.....and thats a $30 or so addition at the DEALER.

Who goes to a dealer for a new tire? And who wants to have to call roadservice and wait an hour or two or more to be towed to a dealer for a simple flat tire?

This has nothing to do with weight savings like Ford infers...or even liability for anything. Spare tires have been included with new cars for as long as they have been making cars.....only now it has become " a liability". lOL

No, it has to do with ford being able to save a couple hundred bucks for the spare tire with sensor and jack/lugwrench.

A lot cheaper to supply a cheap air compressor ($5 at the local dollar store) and a can of goo and call it a "Tire Mobility Kit".

Plus, when people use the "free roadside assistance" to tow their car to the dealer, the dealer gets that business.

Very sneaky if you ask me.

Donut spares were the industry's FIRST attempt to save money on producing a new car.....under the guise of "weight savings"...now this.

The base v6 is a $25k car. And yet no spare tire.

Its absurd.

We didnt find out about it until after we bought ours.

We saw "tire mobility kit" on the sticker somewhere as I recall and we assumed that meant "spare tire and jack".

Who would ever believe that it meant what it meant?

If you ask me, we should all inundate the dealers and Ford's customer line with complaints about this.

I find it funny that this is the one thing Ford dealers leave off the inspection sheet when they go over the car. I didn't even know about this until I started reading threads about it. I would have never known there was no spare until I had a flat and went to change it and then I would have been like WTF!

I find this really dumb and agree, who the hell wants to call roadside service for a flat tire and be waiting for two or three hours [if your lucky].

Are Americans become that lazy that we can't even change tires? LOL

Re: No spare tire!

Well, no doubt some of us have become that lazy.

But the bigger issue is that we have become so damn complacent.

We sit back and rely on others for everything......and just assume everything will be fine. "Someone will take care of me."

The current entitlement attitude/welfare etc is one indication of that.....this is another.

Ford knows some folks will complain.

But thats easy to ignore.

Few people will do anything about it aside from just accept it as "it has to be that way".

They'llget a flat and call the Ford roadside assistance line. Wait an hour or more for help, get towed to the dealer for a new tire or at least a new air pressure sensor if they use the sealant.....

"What can I do?" the people will say.

Self-sufficiency is a dying attribute of the American.

I remember the "old days" on family vacations....Dad would pack the car with enough tools to rebuild an engine if he had to.......sometimes he never needed the tools and it was wasted space/weight. But sometimes he did use them and it saved money and time.

Ford has our cash. And they almost guarantee additional income from people using their roadservice for a flat tire that has to be replaced.

And we have the cars with an umbilical cord to Ford, less a spare tire.

Re: No spare tire!

Isn't the roadside service connected to the life time of your warranty? So when your warranty runs out so does your roadside service.

Agree complacent and lazy. I wish I could count on someone to take care of me...

Re: No spare tire!

The response I got from the dealer I use:

"...it was actually a matter of weight and space. Several vehicles have gone this route. BMW was the first one to do this and every body else followed suit. Even some of the Explorer and Flexs have this kit. Trucks still have a regular spare."

Re: No spare tire!

LOL

Not an issue of space in the Mustang......they still have the (otherwise wasted) space for the spare tire...just that little kit in the middle of it.

I agree its a weight and space savings though...less space in their warehouses to have the spare tires to put into cars and less weight since they dont have to have them shipped to them to begin with.

LOL

Re: No spare tire!

its not nearly as cut and dry as Ford just deciding they can save a few dollars by not including a spare. There are far more deeper things that caused this decision, who knows... EPA might have been part of it, some crazy odd standard, even Union BS who knows.

Well, if thats the case I would love to hear the explanation.

Instead, 3 dealers and the Ford customer service rep told me "its to save weight and space".

If anything, the EPA would be against this.

Think about it......some of the "tire mobility kits" will get tossed day one by folks who get a real spare. The others, when they are used, leave behind an empty can of chemical goo and a tire that still needs repaired or replaced.....plus the added hydrocarbons that need to be burned for the tow truck to come get the cars that the "TMK" doesnt work on due to damage.

(I know thats far fetched...but just to show the point that anything can be spun a certain way...LOL)

Sorry, call me a cynic.

I say its so they can save the money and force the cost to the consumer if they want it. Makes it look like the price of the vehicle is being held down when really all the yare doing is taking from it.

Is the 2010-2011 trunk sheetmetal exactly the same as that from the 2099 and earlier?

I may be wrong but I personally used the device that came with my brothers 2011, it's not just an air pump. It also spits out a gew that is used to clog the tire (it's like a sealant) then you use the air pump and it can last up to 50 miles. Worked fine for us but you have to bring it back to your dealership to refill it

Re: No spare tire!

SO you have to take the "TMK" back to the dealer to refill the goo? No aftermarket solution?? And what do they charge for THAT?

Yet ANOTHER reason I say this is just a moneysaving/making device for Ford.

Once that soare is in your trunk, you can use it as many times as you need, or at least until the tread wears off....LOL

The goo is free untill your 36k warranty expires and chevy would probably give you a piece of gum to seal your tire, haha

Re: No spare tire!

I hope somebody at ford reads these forums and realizes how stupid it is to replace a spare tire with a can of goo and how pissed off some of the public is about it , I mean this no spare tire thing they came up with is one of the stupidest ideas they came up with.

Wild speculation aside, as stated in the owner's manual, it's optional equipment (presumably tied to a certain package). My buddy's 2011 v6 vert has the inflation kit; my 2012 GT has a spare, jack, etc.

I have GT500 wheels. I don't think I can have that as a spare. I'll take the flat repair kit.
