Just got a price quote on gears...

Price for putting in Ford Racing 3.73 gears with pinion bearings and adjusting factory computer for new gears (not full tune) was $650 out the door. It sounds a little high to me, but I am in Atlanta. Thoughts?

Is that including the gears or just the install? How much are they charging to adjust for the gears? Install is usually around 350+ depending on where you go.

The whole enchilada: parts, labor, and adjusting computer for speedometer change. I didn't ask what he would charge for just the parts portion and just the labor portion, but I was factoring in how much the parts would cost from American Muscle vs getting it all through the dealership.

AM would charge $265 for all the parts; so, that would mean I am paying about $385 for the labor and the computer adjustment.

That price isn't too bad. I paid $575 on my 04 GT (here in Northern Virginia), but that also included the SCT tuner that adjusted the speedometer for the new gears. I'd make sure you are getting that tuner. Otherwise it would be too high of a price.

So you got gears, labor, and tuner for 575? That sounds good to me. I am going to talk to Injected Engineering in Marietta, GA to see if they will beat the dealership quote.

That would be correct, gears, labor and tuner for that low price. Of course that was probably about 4 or 5 years ago. So your quote would be reasonable, the thing is just making sure you get the tuner. So your quote was from a dealership?

Re: Just got a price quote on gears...

Yeah, same dealership where I bought the car, but my guess is that I probably won't get to keep the tuner...

Probably not and you are paying dealership labor. I'd check to see if there is a shop in the area that specializes in Mustangs and see what they can do for you.

Re: Just got a price quote on gears...

well I just did as set in my 06 , and it took 3 + hours from start to finish and I only had 2 beers so I'd say the labor is reasonable

Re: Just got a price quote on gears...

there was a receipt in the glove box of my 06 ,the previous owner had a posi-unit with 3.73's installed in the 7.5 , and they RAPED HIM for $1150 ........ WTF ???? AND they didn't even set the rear up right ,as I just had to redo everything ....
he could have bought a NTO 8.8 GT rear for around $800 - $900 complete ...

Re: Just got a price quote on gears...

Ouch. See, I was thinking about getting the t-lok at the same time, but I didn't ask about that...I wonder if it would push me into Rapesville too?

they have to take out the center section no matter what ,so labor shouldn't be any different ,just the additional price of the posi unit

Well, that's if someone isn't trying to rape you though, right? lol

Get this...I just talked to another shop up in Kennesaw, GA who wanted $900 - $1,000 for parts and labor!

Re: Just got a price quote on gears...

Jeez, of all the shops I've seen that are "recommended", the dealership is actually the least expensive! I think when AM quotes standard labor, they must have rural AL rates in mind... 4 hours of labor in ATL at any shop is sounding like about $400.

Re: Just got a price quote on gears...

Just for anyone's edification -- as I am constantly learning more -- if you have a 2011+, you already have a limited slip differential; so, you do not NEED the t-lok rebuild kit. You also don't need to replace your differential if you're just looking for something that isn't an open differential. SO, if you don't have a lot of miles on your Mustang, there's no need to buy that rebuild kit.

Now, buying some different type of differential like a torsen or something will obviously augment what came from the factory, but at least with the 3.7L engines (not sure about earlier models), all you need are those new gears and the pinion bearing
