Main factors are lead foot and idling. Take those two out of the equation, and you can get some good mileage.
Oh, I should add gearing to that list too. I guarantee you that the guys getting anywhere near 30 have stock 2.73 gears.

Yep and that's the way I like it. Near older gt performance with two less cylinders. And not to mention going a week and a half on a tank instead of 4 days. And that was on my 02 v6 can't imagine a gt in that model.

Re: MPG

I've got the 3.31 gears......not a bad trade off so far with 24-25 average BEFORE installing the CAI

Isn't that the gears that come with the gt or like one above the 2.73?

Re: MPG

I have 3.31 gears and I was getting like 22-23 mpg avg with probably 80% highway (although the beltway doesn't really act the same as a normal highway...)

Long trips to and from MI (from MD) I get usually around 27-29 mpg

Recently I installed a JLT CAI and have gotten around 20 mpg on my last 2 tanks... But I think thats just cause I've been slamming on the gas

I will see what happens on my next tank, hopefully around 24-25 mpg

Rykenknight, where in MD you from? I'm in Silver Spring

I think so. GT also offers 3.55 and 3.73 as Ford options. If you go above 3.31 in the V6, it requires a tune.

In all reality I get 19-22 with the 4.0 which is in the EPA estimate.

Yeah don't rub it in. I'd kill to sit in traffic near the beach. 285 doesn't get on the top 10 of MPG trips, but surprisingly you can escape traffic here sometimes.

Let me tell you Atlanta traffic rivals most anything. I live in the city and only in Atlanta can there be 9 lanes in one direction all stopped or going 5 mph! :p

Agh!!!!! Don't get me started.. Especially when it rains people forget how to drive.

Peachtree has to be the most poorly designed road there ever was. I've learned how to cut across it.

Atlanta is listed as the worst metro traffic in the country. There is no debate.

I just moved to Atlanta less than a year ago and you are definitely right about that. It usually takes me like 30-45 min to go 13 miles to work and that's considered a pretty good commute to most people. Glad I got a mustang though because I've been averaging about 20 mpg in the city which is actually better than my old Honda which I had before the mustang. And it's quite a bit more fun to drive, even in traffic!

No shocker there when it takes 40 minutes to drive 8 miles.

My job is flexible with start time so I head into the office around 9:45-10:09, but you can still find gridlock at times!

That's not bad. I get worse than that. Then again idling kills the MPG.

Re: MPG

Your driving habits are the biggest factor in determining your mpg. I was getting 31.5 mpg hwy and 21 city. I installed an airaid cai and flowmaster axle back exhaust and seen my mpg actually decrease. Also the car feels like it lost a little power. I did not get a tune as non was required with the cai. I read on another forum that a tune is mandatory with these cars regardless of what the sales websites say, because changing cai without a tune causes this problem. I will let you know how it turns out once I get a tune...

Have you disconnected the battery and reconnected? Forces computer to recalibrate.

Re: MPG

you are messin about with the airflow so it makes sense to me that any change like that will need a tune to go with it..... otherwise its no advantage over standard.

Re: MPG

I usually average about 20 in the city and I just took my car on it's first road trip and I averaged about 27-28 doing between 75-80 the whole way. Probably would have been better mpg had I gone a little slower. I'm looking to add on a CAI pretty soon. Do you guys see much of an improvement in mpg with having one?

Re: MPG

I get an average of 25MPG with mixed driving. I average 65-75 MPH on the highway and I'm not shy about getting my foot on it to get up to speed or to get past someone. My only mods are a C&L CAI and an Airaid Throttle Body spacer. With the 3.7L you get your best mileage right around 2K RPMs. If you can run 1500-2000 I'll bet you'll see big improvements. If you accelerate too slowly, you'll use more gas than accelerating quickly.

So i got a quick tune and the car is 100% better. It's faster and gets better gas mileage that it did when it was stock. Im getting 21.5+ mpg in the city (driving like and old man behind the wheel of a Corvette) and 28 mpg hwy at around 70 mph. It seems to get the best mph if you shift at or just under 2k rpm.
