first oil change

we(my wife and me) just bought our 2012 mustang over the weekend in north carolina and drove it to its new home in tennessee. it has 300 miles on it.
i am wondering how many miles should i go for the first oil change with the break in oil?
how long does everyone go in between normal oil changes also?

I know when I rebuild a engine its 1500 miles but not sure about a new car ask the dealership you bought it from. They will probably say 3000

Re: first oil change

I'm changing mine at 3,000 to get rid of any crap in the engine from the manufacturing process. Second change will be at 10,000 which would be 7,000 after the first one. Then every 7,500 for the rest of the time I own this car. I'll probably just stick with the genuine Ford oil. (Motorcraft) That way if traveling I can always just stop at a ford dealer and pick up a quart or have the oil & filter changed if needed.

Every 5k. First one today actually. You could go higher really but I've got the maintenance plan which covers it every 5.

I like both answers here. I do mine every 5-6k to be safe. I've been going to Ford since I bought it back in 08.

Re: first oil change

My opinion is that at 3,000 miles the oil needs to be changed to get all of the extremely small filings and shavings out of the oil that actually get through the filter.

After that change all of the crap in the system is large enough to be picked up by the filter.

I may be wrong but that is how I do all of my new cars and I never ever had one that used oil no matter how hard I ran it.

I just don't need my oil to act like honing oil and cause premature wear that could be prevented. 3,000 for the first change is what I'm gonna do.

Exactly $35 is worth saving thousands later.

Re: first oil change

Seeing as I get oil changes for $20 at the dealership I bought it from as a sales perk, I'll probably be doing that. I'm thinking I'll change it at 1k miles, then every 5k. I'm not comfortable with the whole 10k miles thing they recommend, but 3k is overkill.

Re: first oil change

If you live and mostly drive in a place like I live in (FLORIDA) and it is extremely hot almost all of the time ,FINE.

Just remember to go back to the 5W 20 when it gets colder.

*********************OR*****************************

Just stick with the 5W 20 all of the time for better lubrication and better cooling.

The Mobil 1 is Excellent and they do sell 5W 20

Re: first oil change

I was just reading through my owners manual and on page #315 it Say's:

"Use of synthetic or synthetic blend motor oil is not mandatory. Engine oil need only meet the requirements of FORD specification WSS-M2C945-A and the certification mark."

It holds 6 quarts of 5W 20

Apparently, any oil that meets the specs would be fine. I would imagine that if not using Synthetic you would really need to change it more often.

The main thing is that 5W 20 is the only weight recomended.

Ronnie

Re: first oil change

the normal interval for the 3.7L V6 is 10,000 miles. There is a reading on your cluster that tells you the life you have left, Based on how you drive it will count down. Some change it every 5k some every 10k some every 3k. It not needed more often than 5k, and I think 10k is fine with the oil recommend.

If you are paranoid then change it at 3 or 5k.... but it doesnt have break in oil in it from the factory, its already broken in and ready to go.

My 2012 has 6k on it, going to wait on my first change at 10k

Yeah you could wait till 10k. At 5k my % was still at like 70%. And it still looked good as I would check it frequently. But I get it at 5 because it's free. Or feels that way since I've got the maintenance plan.

Re: first oil change

Newer cars have tighter bearing tolerances. They need thinner oil to properly flow the oil without abusing the oil pump. Run 5w-20. It's recommended for a reason, and you'll get better gas mileage too.

Re: first oil change

you should research it more, there was a huge research/debate about the 03/04 cobra and using 5w20 vs 5w30. After tons of research 5w30 protects better but hurts emissions. Thats why Ford ran 5w20 in them, to pass given emissions. This may or may not be the same reason just have to research it and find out.

As always to play it safe run what they recommend.

Re: first oil change

2003 / 2004 Cobra Probably, We are on the 2011 + Mustang V6 forum. I don't think the V8 cobra is relevant here.

My 2012 manual that came with my car say's 5W-20 and unless Ford comes out with a service bulletin stating different I will stick to the 5W-20

I will use fully synthetic even though Blend or regular oil is OK.

5W-30 would probably be safe because it still flows as a 5 weight oil.

The older Mustangs and Cobra's had entirely different engines then our great up to date engineered 3.7 V-6 engines.
