'11+ Auto or Stick?

Just curious which of you guys have an auto or stick.

I've got the Chinese-perfected MT82.

Re: '11+ Auto or Stick?

Manual because autos are just boring.

If everyone on the road HAD to drive a manual there would be alot less stupidity out there!

It aint the best manual though so i can see why some opt for the autos, the 2013 auto shifter actually looks decent but the ones before ruin the look of the interior. It screams look at me, im a rental!

Manual. All the cars I've ever had have been manual, besides my old Titan. Just wouldn't seem right ( to me ) getting my car without it.

Manual *****es!!!

Why?
1. Because I'll never be on a drag strip.
2. Because it keeps my pimp hand strong.
3. When it's an old jalopy, I'll be able to pop the clutch when I have a dead battery.
4. The shift knob DOESN'T look like my ball sack.
5. Having the cup holders directly in the way of my shifting makes it easier to drop kick who ever thinks they're going to bring a drink into my car.

That's my top 5.

Re: '11+ Auto or Stick?

learned to drive a friends CRX in high school with stick shift.....took a while to get the hang of it. Owned many..but Slimer is my first manual car since....hmmmm......2004. Still drive friends rides to evaluate how car is doing when we do some customizing and the details I do seem to be at least half manuals of some type....especially a sweet 2008 Viper GTS I get to wax every 6 months....sigh.

Re: '11+ Auto or Stick?

Manuals are fun, but if you commute in bumper to bumper traffic -- not so much fun. And if on top of that you have bad knees and back problems, then the manual only makes those things worse (it's hell getting old - pinched nerves in the back, bulging discs, and already had the knees scoped once)

And at the drag strip the automatic is the way to go. No missed shifts, car is always consistent. I don't do road courses so haven't needed to select my gears like that requires. But with the 2013 and the new feature, which will hold the gear as long as I want and downshift or upshift when I tell it, I might try a road course now.

Re: '11+ Auto or Stick?

take your time with that Fluffy. Dont try and half clutch on shifting from gear to gear...all the way to the floor and release slowly on way out to cut the jerking to a minimum. found out under full power take off...half clutching doesnt work well...caught a 1/2 second of gear tooth going into third and mashed it all the way to the floor to finish the shift. Been going all the way down since...seems to like that more. Pehaps our 2013s are a bit fussier..lol

Auto. Don't get me wrong I'd prefer driving manual but since she's a daily driver and considering my commute auto is just what I picked this time. But manual is for sure much more fun to drive!

Re: '11+ Auto or Stick?

My previous car was a manual (BMW) and driving in Jersey traffic (sometimes commute to NYC) isnt much fun.. however, I do agree that manuals are much more fun to take control of, to each it's own... for those who have auto's check this out:

Re: '11+ Auto or Stick?

I'm relearning my shifting skills. Been 2 years since I've driven one, and drove one for two years as well when I did. I mainly did this to see where people sit on this board as far as percentage of each. I did not mean to start a "better" war.

The main reason I picked a manual is because I missed mine and they sound so damn cool when shifting. The exhaust note is totally different than an auto.

Interesting to see that - up until now I've only seen it for the 2005-09. A friend has it on his 2005 and his only complaint has been that it really doesn't make the shift any different from moving it up 1-2-3 etc, the transmission will still shift by computer command if the computer says "no" but it prevents him from accidentally hitting reverse.

Not sure about it on the 2013 though. I already have an option for manual shift using the button in sport mode. So ratcheting wouldn't do anything more for me that the car doesn't already have available. And Ford programmed it so that it will hold the gear as long as you want and the upshift and downshift are immediate in sport mode using the +/- button.

I got that down definitely, but what I'm really having trouble with is matching revs when I downshift, everybody says "match the road speed" but what does that mean in terms of RPMs? It's been the biggest source of problems for me, especially into 1st for speed bumps, it's just so hard for me to do it without jerking about.

Re: '11+ Auto or Stick?

go for second....the 13s like that better after speed bumps...it wont stall. secondly...try NOT to down shift....let it ride down with foot off gas to intersections...then put the clutch in once you hit about 1200 rpms before it starts to complain back at you. if you can take off without completely stopping...use the speedo/tach to determine next gear....over 15 mph...go for third..below..second. let it wind itself down...mine does NOT like downshifting until its below 1500 in current gear.

---------- Post added at 08:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 PM ----------

i come into speed bumps in second...let it coast with no foot on clutch to 10mph...then once ove the bump...gas back on nice and easy...until the next one

My last car was a stick and I found I could not Text, Talk on the phone, eat or read my Nook Book and shift gears properly.

Now I have the Automatic Transmission and all of my problems went away.

Auto

I have no problem with the manual owners preferring their manuals. I just have a problem when they assume auto owners don't know how to drive a manual...as if it is some holy grail skill.

Owned a manual for 13 years and miss shifting less and less. The few times when I'd want it don't outweigh the positives of not having to use my left foot all the time.
