I drive from Orlando to Tampa Florida 3 to 4 times a week. With the 6th gear, I get from 27.8 to 28.4 MPG, and that's with the 3:31 rear gearing.

I like that 6th gear.
Negative bucko ... I try to stay on highway as much as possible but unlike floridas flat roads my highway has ups and downs. By the time i shift to 6th my rpms drop below 1k.

Gotcha. For me, it's a great blessing to have 6th, but I see your point.

I used to drive my truck from Texas to Florida years back; there was a section of east Texas, along route 20 (I believe) that was up and down. You're right, I was constantly up and down shifting until I got into Louisiana.

With 2.73s I wouldn't go into 6th at anything below 45, way too low on rpms.

In 6th gear, 1000 rpms is right around 40 mph.

Well, let me be more specific. If you have 2.7 gearing and 18s, then that's it. If you have smaller tires, your rpms go higher. If you have bigger gearing, your rpms go higher. Unless you have 2.7 gears or smaller and/or are have some giant diameter tires, 1000 rpms in 6th is around 40.

45 is our speed on highway 280 in my town. It opens up to 65 a few miles after our main strip. But most everywhere is 45. In an auto I barely push 1,200 rpm around town.

Well round here interstate and highway are two different things haha. But the on ramps people tend to do 45-50. I go 65+.

Ok so i tested the rpm vs mph .. 1k/40mph .. But going uphill i had to throw it back to 5th and ride 2500/50-60mph . Once i settled out to flat road i got to throw it in 6th for 3min and off the highway. So again i didn't really need 6th.

Of course we don't need it! But it helps with efficiency. I think that is what some people are saying. You have people like me who go from first to sixth lol, and then others who use it occasionally, then some who never use it. On my car 42/43 is 1k, 42 is 988ish and 43 is like 1018. My baby usually does okay, rarely do I need to downshift. I bet the v8 can sit in 6th all day.

Sweet. My dad lives on north side of Knoxville. Took my 'Stang down there this summer and went driving all around the city.

Ummm, wouldn't that be lugging the engine at low rpms in 6 gear? I know it all depends on wheel size and gear ratio but seems like a low speed to be in 6 gear.

just trying to learn.....with an AT wouldn't the torque convertor allow slip?

Siber, what gears do you have? I find any running at less than 2k makes any hill a down shift I find myself keeping it at 2k just so I can accelerate. This may explain my 22-24 mpg as every time I read about folks getting 28-30 I'm amazed. I've never had more than 27 (all hwy)

yes I do know this is an old thread....

3.31's Mud. Being in 6th allows a faster downshift to 3rd. And truth be told it is normally when I have my Mom in the car.

I just did two trips... w my procharger and various other mods... I finally got my best mpg hwy. I have stock 2.73 gears and on Friday I did 27.5 mpg and just today finally got the EPA stated 29 mpg!!!!
Mind you, I was in 6th doing 60-65 mph. And I did hit stop and go traffic for about ten minutes, I'm sure I would've crossed 30!

yes I do know this is an old thread....

I think I might need get the car checked out...Been getting 18-19ish on my cyclone...
Is traffic in Bay Area a factor? I tried my best to avoid busy hours though.

Or it's due to there's a excessive amount of carbon built up in the engine? I don't think it's the case for a 3yr old car with 17k mile on it.

Looking for advices and different possibilities.

California is a factor as well as being in the bay area. Traffic time around here is compared to when it it running good during the day there. If I am just cruising around Knoxville my mileage drops to below 20 mpg, open road it will get around 28-30.

I use 6th when I'm cruising on the interstates. Gas mileage is just so much better.
