"Ideal" exhaust diameter

Going to be doing a total custom exhaust and was wondering what the ideal tube diameter would be. I have a 2012 with dual exhaust. I think stock is just under 3" so I was thinking about going with 3". I have a tune and intake for now, I will have headers and H or X pipe soon. Thinking about building my own x or H pipe. I have plans to go with forced induction or doing a shot of NO2 but thats down the road a ways.
