Rear axle surface rust???

Hello all,

I need some feedback on my rear axle which to me displays a little too much surface rust for a car that was manufactured in 6/12 and has never seen rain since I have owned it and is rarely driven with only 1000 miles. Is this common?

Yep, mine was like that when I picked it up.
Might actually clean it up and then shoot it with clear to leave the metal look.

All of them are like that . I can sprayed mine almost 3 years ago with cheap semi gloss black paint when 'Little Red' came in. It still looks pretty good.

My '12 is same I noticed when I was putting it on jacks stands for the winter. When I picked up the car new at dealer my friends were a little worried when they saw the "rusty" heat shields. It doesn't really look like rust just a heavy duty ferrous metal

That rust actually protects the axle
