Your car came from the factory to run on 87 octane. If it has no tune installed, and the noise is truly pinging, I'd get it checked out as to why its pinging. Adding a higher octane to prevent the ping is only a band aid fix.
Now if it has a tune installed, then the higher octane may be required by the tune for the aggressive timing the tune has installed. The stock tune only requires 87 octane.
It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
