Questions about gears

Of those of you who have upgraded from 2.73's, what did most of you go to?

I am looking at 3.31 or 3.55 gears. Primarily because I want it to maintain good fuel economy AND improve off the line performance. This cars future includes the supercharger kit.

I have a tune and cai so far. My 13 doesn't feel fast. 0-60 with an automatic and only traction control is 7.7 seconds. I am at 5k feet and it's pretty hot recently. 10k miles so far on stock Pirelli tires.

Thanks guys and gals.

If you are going to add a blower, go with at least 3.73s because your mileage will go away with a SC. If you want power and mileage go with a turbocharger. You will notice an improvement with the 3.55s but I would still go with the 3.73s.

What about the 3.31s. Will I see an improvement?

Aren't 3.73s too low for a SC?

There are turbo kits? Hmmm...

Thanks for the reply!

Anything lower tha what you have is going to show an improvement but probably not what you are hoping for. It doesn't cost any more for a 3.73 than a 3.31 and there is a big difference in acceleration.

Anytime you can take a load off of everything by gearing as opposed to engine power is a good thing. Upping your horsepower instead of dropping your gear ratios causes more wear and tear. Gearing is also cheaper.

American Muscle carries a great turbo kit for the V6 for 5-6K.

Cool. This is my commuter car for the next 2 years. As anyone seen a significant drop in MPGs with 3.73's?

I won't put an sc or turbo on it until the warranty is up.

I installed 3.73's onine and I maybe lost 2-3 mpg highway on average. it's my city mileage that really hit the fan because I cannot help but race EVERYTHING! including the birds flying along the sidewalks...

I am just getting 24 at 80 or so. Maybe 3.31 or 3.55 will do for now...

I dunno. Is there a calculator for this stuff?

Hmmm 3.73's should help drastically with that 0-60 time. I'm running an Airaid intake and 3.31's ( included in the performance package ). I haven't had a chance to actually time my 0-60 officially, but I'd have to guess around high 5's - very low 6's. Once I get 3.73's I'm expect mid 5's if not lower. Keep in mind mine is also a manual and I'm also kinda right at sea level. Those 2.73's are killingg your thirst for speed haha. Get rid of those ASAP. You're already pretty set with the tune and such. Just gotta ditch those gears

What elevation do you live at and what is your average speed on the highway? I can barely get 25 recently.

Me to. There's no way I'm getting 31 mpg even with 2.73 gears, maybe if I drove for a few hours non stop at highway speeds then maybe! But in every day driving not even close! Right now in stop and go driving and not babying it at all im at 13/100 liters or just over 18 mpg mind you I'm not ***** footing either. To obtain these 31 mpg plus milage there is now way anyone is shifting after 2k and having any fun at all with their cars!! Maybe I'm leaking fuel. Lol. The best I ever got was straight highway driving for a three hour trip I got 8/100 km or 29 mpg. But as soon as I hit and started to drive around town it went right up to 11/100 km. On mix driving I usually get 12/100 km or around 20 mpg. And that's driving my car no ***** footing.

I agree I have the stock 2.73 gears and around town if I am babying my car ( shifting at 2k) chilling in 6th gear at 45 I can barely get 22 mpg. Maybe I have a leak as well lol

Lol, sounds about what I would get if I was even more aggressive with the right foot. Some people say the get 25-26 mpg in mixed driving with more aggressive gearing than we have!? Bet their cars never hit anything past 4rpm or 100 km/55 mph. Its a stang people drive it!!!!!! Or go buy a Prius. Jk jk lol. I bought my stang to drive not to achieve as much mpg as possible by babying it all the time!

I bought my V6 because my wife at the time simply liked the Red Candy Metallic. The 305hp claim was what sold ME. I took it on a trip from Texas to Rhode Island and back last year. Strictly highway driving. I filled it eight times I believe. The worst average mileage was 28.2mpg and the best was 32.8mpg. The rest were somewhere in between. Around town I get between 18 and 25mpg depending on how many lights I make. I still plan eventually to change to 3.73s.

Now I bought my GT not caring about mileage and it spends most of its time in the garage just begging to hit the road. It gets from 18 to 26 depending on my driving., I have only had it on a highway trip once and it peaked at 28.2 for a couple of miles but the avereage was more around 25. I plan on ruining those numbers also with 4.10s.

Stating MPG isn't really helpful alone. What average speeds are you traveling?

Here in NM, the speed limit is 75. At that speed I am at about 2k rpm and can just barely hit 25.8mpg...

Dang it. Lol

My 2011 with 3:31's gets 26.7 highway driving, with the cruise set just a hair under the 80 MPH mark.

Maybe my 2.73 is a freak. I get better mpg than most of you guys, driving in hilly/mountainous terrain, and having a manual.

32mpg going south, 31mpg coming north, going 75mph on a 1300 mile round trip. That includes having to go up Jellico in 5th gear because 6th didn't have the oomph to maintain speed.

Yep. Jellico is pretty steep. My wife grew up in Speedwell or some place like that. We live 35-40 miles from there. I don't worry about gas mileage, with all the hills in East Tennessee.

I live just an hour north of Jellico in Kentucky. So, I have a lot of hills here to contend with daily too. lol

I just got 24.9 going 80 from the boro to Dayton tn. I smoked up and down some back roads and ridges/mountains so I killed mpgs. So I am happy with the 24.9 out of this tank.

I set the computer and was getting 26.2-26.8 going 80.

3:31 auto with 93h

OP, if you're gonna do anymore performance upgrades, get the 3:73's. my car came with 3:31's. i got the 3:73's installed a few weeks back. i did a 400 km road trip through the mountains and i averaged 10L/100km. average speed was about 120 km/hr and turning about 2450 rpm's. the gears wont hurt your mileage that much as long as you dont drop the hammer at every stop light. btw....acceleration is night and day from the factory gearing

Your 13 v6 does 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds. Holy cow. Wtf. Dude, that can't be right. I have an 11 v6 and back when I had a tune and 2.73 gears I was running 5.5 0-60 mph with traction control off. Since I got my 3:73 gears and other n/a mods I'm running under 5 seconds 0-60 mph. I can run 4.6 to 4.8 0-60 mph.

I really don't know. Although, I don't recall turning off anything but traction control.
But it was 103 degrees at the time.
