I just looked and we have 87, 88 and 92 octane around here.

I'll try out that 92.

Filled up with 91 yesterday. Not a huge difference, but it does seem to have a deeper rumble while idling. Also seems to be a little bit more aggressive. Nothing too noticeable though.

93 octane only with Lucas oils a real octane boost. **** works. I noticed it in my F-150 on 89 octane. Can't wait to do the heads and intake swap to Stang parts on it now.

Ok guys, you've made me want to experiment. I was down to an 1/8th tank today, so I filled up on some Exxon Premium. (I usually use 87) I'll report back on my results!

I miss living in Texas. Not only because it is a great place to live, but gas was so much cheaper there!

It's 3.60 here for the regular.

I got 93 for 3.41 today but gas is down right now. Usually at Shell I pay close to $4.

Sounds about right. The United States has the cheapest gas of any other country, by a lot. When I visited London back in 2007, it was about $8 USD a gallon, but in contrast, other countries have better public transport, so owning a car in Europe is not nearly as common as the U.S.

The v6 is designed for 87. That's what this whole thread is about.

YES! it is designed to be completely efficient off 87 octane, but that doesn't mean that running a higher octane fuel doesn't have it's advantages

Gas Octane

[QUOTE=Mustanglulu;1747575]I just got a lecture regarding using reg gas ( the cheapest possible). Any advice?[/QUO

Since your new, we will let you slide. New parts added, MUST post picture(s). Accident (Hopefully Not) Picture, *** Chewing Pictures and Details.....

I Had a Tune and CAI among other things. FIrst tank I ran 87 octane. Next tank after Exhaust Mods I ran 92. Don't care about mileage but sure felt like there was more power with the higher octane. The tune had a lot to do with it.

We have a 96 SVT Cobra. Previous owner only used Shell 93 because of its cleaning additives. We stayed with that unless we can't find a Shell station then we go with Sunoco 93. Our car from the factory was designed for 93. I occasionally throw in a bottle of Lucas injector cleaner also. If Shell's advertising is for real it should keep the valves cleaner.

I bought an SCT Tuner with Bama tunes all are 93 based. I've been lucky and haven't been Anywhere that I couldn't find 93. Right now in PA Shell 93 is $3.99.

Most I've paid was last summer close to $4.50 a gallon. Not a DD so it's worth it. All of our other vehicles get 87. Still use Shell or Sunoco though. Except in my 165,000 mile Ranger. With it I usually go for lowest price.

As far as more power with higher octane my understanding is modern engines with ECU's and knock sensors will adjust the timing for maximum performance w/o knocking/pinging.

So if you have a performance car and use higher octane gas you should get maximum performance out of your engine.

Is this correct? I know it was true back in the day with Saab & Volvo Turbos. Back in the 80's when there was only low octane gas my mechanic added alcohol/water injection to my Saab Turbo to allow for more advanced timing and boost with the then available 85-89 octane unleaded.

I had another question, I was told this today but I'm not sure how true it is. If I have been putting 87 in my tank this entire time (I have about 5k miles) and I switch to 93, will my car become dependent on 93? If I only use 93 for a while, will my v6's performance drop below baseline if I switch back to 87?

The computer and variable timing should adjust to whatever gas you use. Somewhere there is an article on the V6 about using higher octane on the weekends for performance. The GT pics up 8 hp on premium. The V6 is 74% of the hp of a GT. So will the V6 pickup 6 hp? Will you feel it? Probably not. Will it run smoother? Perhaps. But if you drive your car 250,000 miles that's $2500.00 more for gas which could be a good down payment when you're ready for a new one.
