Try this in a quiet garage with the radio turned off, engine idling and the transmission in neutral; push the clutch in and then release it a few times. When released, every car I've ever owned with a manual transmission makes at least some additional noise when the clutch is released as the shafts spin up.

I don't think it's correct to say there's nothing moving in the transmission when it's in neutral and the engine is running.
Yea I agree with you, the gears will be spinning. But since there is no load on the gears there won't be much friction to warm up the fluid

Input shaft is spinning, but not all the gears...the gears are what make contact with the oil, and splash it around.

So, with no gears moving in neutral, I don't see the standard transmission oil warming up "to temp" during a 10 minute idle in minus degree temperatures. Engine oil, yes.

As agreed, engine block heater would be best the engine; don't know what could be used for the standard transmission other than some sort of floor heater underneath the transmission.

So glad I do not have these issues in Florida. And as an added measure, I'm one of those rare few apparently that parks TWO cars in the garage. Imagine that!

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
