2nd gear

Hi everyone I've been searching this forum awhile now and finally decided to join. I was hoping someone could help me with a slight problem I've been having. I have a 2014 m6 that just turned 3000miles. Ever since I bought it 2nd gear has been somewhat notchy especially when cold. I bought a steeds tri-ax and Barton 2 post but that didn't do much. All other gears go in perfectly. Is this just something I need to get used to or is there a problem? It just seems like you have to handle 2nd gently or you get the notch. And I have done some research but I've mostly come up with the notorious 11-12 mt82s.

I've got a 2013. Only have issues with 3rd when really getting on it and sometimes miss the gate (letting the stick shift center itself first fixes it). 2nd can be notchy but usually not a problem. Are you having issues getting it to go into 2nd? If so I'd bring it into the dealer, but be sure to put it back to stock on the shifter first so the dealer doesn't try to blame it on the aftermarket parts. Good luck.

It goes in I just thought it was something that would go away over time. I have gotten locked out before and that was scary. After it warms up it guides right in. I guess I'm just trying to figure out why its only that gear.

I have an '02 GT and my second gear is temperamental. I have to put it into gear with force and hold it there until fully into gear or it has a good chance of popping out. Same thing with my friend's '88 GT and my buddy's '09 V6

My 12 with 3000 miles on it does the same thing. The chassis mounted shifter will never be as good as the internal shifted boxes. The MT82 has serious limitations and this is one of them. Sadly, Ford has not addressed this trans yet for the 2016 model. I guess that would be admitting it's design is suspect. Shifting at 7000 is also a challenge.

It sucks but I'm glad I'm not the only one. I had an 04 gt and sometimes I start to miss shifting in that a lot better. I read that they improved the mt82 for '15 but I hope they just change it all together by the time the machs come out.

My 2014 has always been notchy with 5th gear, now that it's cold out, it sometimes won't go into 5th with a bit of grinding. Now, I don't even use 5th unless the car is warmed up. My car has just over 5,000 miles currently.

After several issues with this clutch/transmission, I talked to an engineer at Ford, he said that in January or February, Ford will release a new additive or oil to help get rid of the shifting issues.

Most of these replies are the biggest reason's why I got rid of my MT V6 and bought an AT GT. I love slamming threw gears but not when I have to worry if it will not go in to gear!

Is this new additive different from the xl-18 they came out with? I've heard that the 13's and up already had that put in. I may be mistaken though. I just wonder how much an additive could really do.

I asked him if this was at all related to the 11-12 cold shift TSB, he said it was basically an update to that. He also said this affects all MT82 transmissions and it will be the fluid used in all production cars going forward (2015+ Mustangs).

He said that it's not published yet (conversation took place on November 18) as they are still finalizing things but to expect something around January or February.
