what porting does, is to smooth out the air flow to the cylinder, in the case of the intake. the smoother the better to a point. also you want the gasket and manifold to be about the same size, so that the gasket or manifold do not cause a dead head were the air could actually reverse flow. or bounce. it works like water on a smooth surface, then add a rock. the water changes direction. and moves in directions you do not want. most intakes just have the casting marks smoothed and then do whats called gasket matching. it works best with cylinder heads that are also ported to get maximum benefit. most stock engines will gain some rpm but loose midrange power and drivability.

look up lone wolf ported intakes. Lone wolf ported intakes installed - Ford Mustang Forums I think its around 15-20hp gain with just porting the intake manifolds. Also most the guys that run 12.7 or faster in the 1/4mile that are all motor have the lone wolf ported intake and I will be doing this as well.
