Auto transmission whine

Recently I have noticed a whine in first gear on my 2011 auto. It only seems to do it in when it's in overdrive. If I shift it manually I don't hear it. I'm planning on taking it to the dealer Thursday morning but was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue.

This is not the typical variable pitched whine that most Fords make from the planetary gears in first gear, then stops when shifting into second and all gears from thereon?

Now I know why my mustang makes this weird noise. What's the planetary gear exactly? Why do we have it

Good question, so I went to here on how generic autos work:
HowStuffWorks "Purpose of an Automatic Transmission"

Planet Gears on 2nd page:

Have to have planetary gears to revolve around the sun gear.

Seriously, just google ford planetary gear, sun gear and the likes. You'll see what we are talking about. Now, why does first gear and reverse make some noise? It's the cut of the gear. Sort of like why many manual transmissions make noise in reverse. Same reason, the cut of the gears. When you hear this noise in automatics, in first gear, and the Ford AOD-E comes to mind first, the pack including the sun gear and planetary gears is turning. Then the 1-2 shift takes place, where the whine fades away throughout the term of the shift, and you're now in second gear, no more whine. That fade is the gradual apply of a clutch that stops that gear pack from turning. It is applied smoothly, as if it were applied rapidly, you would get a slam into the next gear instead of a seamless transfer. Shift kits are an example of this clutch apply taking place fast. Personally I prefer a harder shift. I have always felt that Ford made the shift too mushy, and in my Ford automatics, you will always find a shift kit. The logic behind desiring a firmer shift is rather simple. 1) The shift is more positive ( get it over with ) and 2) the longer the process is drawn out, the more internal heat is generated, and heat is the #1 killer of any automatic transmission. 3) The clutches wear more during these smooth shifts than they do with a quick, get it over with shift. **Stepping down from the podium**

Want to hear it really good? Drive something quiet, and stop at a red light next to an old person in a Grand Marquis / Crown Vic and roll down your window. When they take off nice and slow, you'll hear the whine very clearly, until the car shifts into 2nd gear, at which time you'll hear it fade away.
