If you are interested in going fast in a straight line, get an auto, there is no debate. If you are more into cornering or just like banging gears then get the stick.
As far as saving the brakes by downshifting... Give me 5 brake changes before 1 transmission removal to do a clutch or throwout bearing. That line of thought makes absolutely 0 sense. When I go to stop in my 5 spd, I just toss it in neutral and brake like normal.
I brake in gear and put it in neutral just before the rpms get too low.
