New Tune Woes

Hey all!

I have never used tunes. I had a stock 2013 V6 with an Airaid CAI and a pair of Borla Axel backs. I purchased an MPT 93 Performance Street tune.

The tune is okay, but I'm getting slightly worse MPGs running the tune and 93OCT than running stock with 87 OCT. Should I ditch the MPT tune and try the same tune through BAMA? Or just buy the same tune via MPT but running 87OCT?

Thoughts?

Is a couple mpg's really that important to you? I find it funny when people who buy mustangs care so much about fuel economy. If a new part/ tune makes my car perform better and more fun, losing a couple mpgs is the last thing on my mind. I'm not trying to put you down or anything but that's just how I feel.

MPT is a very aggressive tune, which is why you are experiencing a loss in mpgs. If you make the switch to Bama, you will probably pick up a couple more mpgs but then again you will need to spend $150 and sacrifice a little performance. Its up to you.

Lol yea before all my mods.. I was getting easily 26 city and 30 highway now after my bbk intake short headers and tune I am averaging now roughly 17 mpg city and 24 highway lol... Or maybe it's just because I love to step on it more now that my car sounds so sweet lol I deff have awesome take off now so it's hard not to want to get ahead of everyone on a stop

Well said. But I wonder if I buy the 87OCT whether is will feel the same with not paying for the extra gas money.

There's no doubt it will be faster than stock but you will lose some hp/ tq (from your 93 tune) which you will feel. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but don't our cars get better mpg with higher octane fuel? Either way, a 93 bama tune will get you better mpg than your 93 mpt tune.

Why not speak with MPT and see if they can get you an economy tune since you are already with them.

Pretty simple if you ask me.

OP,

That's a good question and our customers have seen an increase in their fuel consumption with the Bama SF4/X4 but with any aftermarket modification the user is going to want to run the car harder than usual to feel the performance. I might recommend running your tank down, filling up and trying to drive as conservatively as possible to see how it adjusts.

26 city mpg? Do you shift at 1500 rpm? I get around 19 according to fuely , but then again I'm in SoCal with crap traffic and traffic lights every two feet.

Welcome to the club lol...I get MAYBE 15 MPG city, 20-25 hwy, on my 93 MPT, same with my 93H bama tune. It sucks, but for me the extra power is 100% worth it. I have a hard time believing some people that say they get 20+ mpg city on any tune.. they have to be shifting at like 1k lol.

I get nasty Miami traffic every day to and from work and I average 21 or so with the occasional mash.

Bumper to bumper traffic is a killer.

I'm running the 93H Bama Tune with an Airaid CAI. MY mileage is excellent and exceed OEM mileage claims. The way you drive has a far bigger impact on your MPG.

I'm very happy to hear that! It's definitely about how it's driven and I certainly didn't get into a Mustang to drive it like a hybrid as well!

That's because you are cop and you drive at the speed limit. You also don't jump on the pedal. All these things would lead you to give yourself a citation for excessive show of acceleration and driving over the speed limit.

With stock 2014 performance package and manual trans, when wife drives 3 miles each way to work, with one stop light and very little traffic, 35mph max speed limit, never sees better than 15 or 16mpg. Cruise control set at 65mph on long back roads is only getting around 26mpg. The Mark VIII running 3.55 gears that the Mustang replaced did better. And I'm not complaining.

I get that only driving pretty hard. Can get an easy 26-27 driving normal traffic speeds in a rural "city" environment. This does include several sections of 2-3 miles @ a constant 45-60 MPH which can be upwards of 33ish in those sections, which helps bring up the totals when you hit the sections with many lights and your pulling 16-17.

Floor it a couple times in that drive and the 27 becomes 21-22 real easy. I bought this as a daily driver replacement for 156 HP 4 banger mazda6, so it is pretty easy to duplicate the accel @ 1/4-1/3 throttle that it used to take being floored in that mazda. Mileage is pretty close to the same if driven about the max accel of the mazda.

I get 28-34 depending on the day on the highway at 70-80mph on the city... I get 14-17... average I get 23-24 right now my car is getting 3.73 it has 2.73s well see the milage city will probably increase FYI I have a manual 6 speed depending on rpm shifts your milage will be different.... shifting before 2k can actually cost you mpg lol

I went from 2.73s-3.73s, highway is still pretty damn good, but my city is taking a pretty big hit! I think it has a lot to do with my right foot though. Lol
