Stock gears vs 3.3 or 3.7?

I forget what's what, but my stock v6 base is at 2.73 if I switch it to 3.73, how much is mpg affected? Does wear and tear start to become an issue?

Well I went from 2.73 to 3.73 and the highway mpg did drop but is still surprisingly pretty good. It went from 9liters to 100kms to 11liters to 100km. Now take it with a grain of salt as I don't baby my car to save as much as I can on fuel milage but my city is where it hurt a lot more. I average 14-15 litters per 100km just city but like I said I drive it. I've seen it at 20 litters per 100kms once and I quickly hit the reset Lol. IMO its the best mod I've done and really wakes up the 3.7!

I switched my gears to 3.31 and I think it's the perfect combination of launch power and fuel economy, I don't even notice much difference in fuel economy

I said this multiple times that the 3.31s should have been the standard gear in the 3.7s. It has good enough launch and fuel mpgs that put to shame the 2.73s. The pp should have been 3.55s or 3.73s.

How much does installation usually run for gears? And is it something some one with minimal car experience do?

You definitely want an experienced mechanic to install your gears. And make sure to get the ford racing gears. I had motive 3.73s and they sounded like an old fire truck siren.

I was thinking about attempting my gears I'm not certified but got wrenching experience. But little scary.

Did you get it done at a dealer? 3.3 or 3.7? What year is your car?

Damn that's cheap, I'm going to go test drive a v6 with the performance pack this weekend to see if it's worth it. Thanks for the info.

Np. They only use ford racing gears (very important) and royal purple. Its nice to still have a place that only does mustangs in this day in age!

I dont mean to be negative but if you never did this before you might want to leave it to a pro. Ive never done it either, nor would I try. Its just to precise of a job. This is a job that if it goes bad, it will be real bad. Setting backlash and shimming, too technical for me. If you can get it done for 280.00 that sounds like a good deal to me. When I had my Cobra I was quoted 700.00 complete with gears.

You not only need to know precisely how to do it, but you also need a bunch of special tools to do it. I watched a video on how to do it. After that I saw how cheap the labor most charge is.

From a performance standpoint, I totally agree with you. From Ford's standpoint, they are watched and checked for their CAFE standards, so every ounce of fuel economy is going to help their total numbers, hence the reason for them equipping the base 3.7's with the 2.73's.

We are fortunate that they offer other ratios for us. I would also agree to those that may state it would be nice if the Performance Package offered all combinations of ratios instead of just the 3.31.

Maybe offer the 2.73s as the option? They could still make the claim of 31 highway mpg and would be able to offer the better mpgs to people that want it more than the added performance. It would definitely be nice to see a wider choice of factory gears available for the customer.

I was going to upgrade from 3.31 to 3.73. But after reading a lot on the forums i decided not to make a change since i drive 48 miles on highway daily. I rarely drive in the city so to me 500 for labor + gear cost + extra fuel cost did not make any sense.

The pull on 3.31 is not bad at all. Now that i have a CAI, Borla s type and a tune I'm totally satisfied with the pull.

3.31s are pretty good gears, and if mine came with them I might not have done mine also. But anyone with those horrific 2.73 really need to upgrade if they are looking for any real performance. They really really hinder our cars acceleration. If any one is just starting out performance modding and running 2.73s, a tuner and gears must be your first mod!

It has to do with the café numbers and units sold. So they have to sell cars with those café numbers to balance out the other vehicles that do poorly with mpg. So all the focus, mustangs, and fiestas help Ford offset the other numbers.

How bad is your gas compared to stock? And when does your top speed top out?

I JUST installed 3.73 gears and I can't really say much for them. I'm not really getting on them until I have a chance to break them in but as for right now I can't wait!

(Cost a lot in LA but they don't whine or anything)

Adding: I'm in LA...install was $450...welcome to California!

Tbh. I barely notice the different. May be extra 7$ every time I gas. The car shows 16.7 mpg city(I also have a BBK throttle body). Used to be 18.9. My car has 93 Bama Race tune, BBK TB, Airaid CAI, and 4.10 gears. I havent top out my top speed yet mainly cause of the drive shaft lol. My car gives couple of 4.6 gt,challenger R/T run for their money lol

P/S I got everything done for 470. Including gears.
