GPS or Where to mount your phone?

I just bought a 2014. I can't for the life of me find a good location for my iPhone. I like to use it for GPS. I considered getting a dedicated GPS with a window mount, but I LOVE the way my iPhone navigation lowers the music volume to give directions. I have a cup holder mount, but it puts the phone in the way to shift (I got a manual transmission). Anyone here have any suggestions that have worked for you?

I will not go the vent mount way, I don't want anything blocking my airflow from the vents. I am not sold on the window suction cup "one size fits all", I have never had luck with them staying in place.

A dedicated GPS with Bluetooth does not do voice over the sync system if I have done my research correctly.

That location would not work for me since I tend to put my windows down on occasion. How does it hold up? Do you have to pick it up off the floor and remount it occasionally? I assume you are using a suction cup mount.

I always had the thought of getting one of those suction cup iphone mounts, grabbing some Velcro straps (or anything of that nature) and sticking it on the dash behind the steering wheel. Here's a pic for a better idea of where I would attempt to place it. I haven't actually tried it as it's only been a thought.

Then, depending on the side you pick, you can adjust it as high or low as you want while keeping your windows free of ring smudges! Then, just remove it with the Velcro when you want to store it. All you'd have of the crime scene is the little Velcro patch you stick on your dash.

Just an idea I've been having.

I have the panavise mount and it positions on the right side of the radio, perfectly within reach.

They also have one that mounts it on the left side if you prefer it to be closer

I have a mount that attaches to the air vent and is on a swivel so you can turn the phone in any direction. I'll post a pic later. I like it and it grips the phone very well. I've been on 3 hours trips and even the bumpiest roads won't knock the phone out of the mount.

Hey WhoDat

I like that mount. I see it looks very sturdy and would probably be good to hold a GPS.
How hard was it to install ???
Did you have any problem with the clips?

Install only took me about 5-10 minutes. Clips were no problem, just gotta remember to pull straight out and not at an angle.

Sent from the future.

I've got a suction cup mount bought it cheap $20 or so. I've got it on my windshield...I'll post a pic later. I've had it for around 4 months now the mount nor my phone has fallen. I've been on 4+ hour drives on bumpy roads and my phone stays in place

I made a mount similar to the panavise mount pictured above. I slip it under the center air vents and the suction cup for the GPS sticks to it. Works great. Cut it out of a thin sheet of metal. Took about 15 mins with the cut out and grinding down the edges. I'll take a couple of pics if you are interested...

I used some velcro (the fuzzy half) to protect the dash from scuffs. It seems to work well...

I considered it, but I don't want to have velcro on the back of my phone. I am looking for one that will mount into a cigarette lighter and not poke out very far. I think thats going to be the best option.

Looks nice. I just really don't want anything hanging from the windshield, especially right in the middle that can block view.

That can get you a ticket in CA. I live in Arizona and we go to CA a few times a year to visit friends and to fly out of LAX. I used to mount my portable Traffic GPS on the windshield till my buddy told me to watch it with CHP. He said they normally wouldn't pull you over for just the windshield mount, but if is for something else like speeding, then they will add that one to the ticket. AZ has no problems that I know of, like most normal states...

Wow really? Didn't know that and I travel to CA every year luckily I don't drive to CA. I'm from TX and haven't had any problems with law enforcement so I'm assuming I'm good.

Yeah, TX and AZ law enforcement are about the same. They are much more realistic than CHP...

FWIW, years ago I had a buddy that had a European VW GTI car stereo show car that he was driving to LA. He got pulled over by CHP because of his limo tinting. The cop made him scrape off a fair amount before he'd let him drive on. This was a AZ registered car. Granted, the tinting wasn't legal in AZ, but not really an issue here...
