Oil Change

Guys should I trust the Oil Life reading from the car or change every 5k miles? Dealer has told me the oil life reading is best way to go

I changed my oil at 1,500 miles, reset the oil monitor, racked up over 10,000 miles and it was around 15%. I changed the oil again, it looked great for having that many miles on it, it was a gold/amber color. I won't change my oil again until the monitor says it's at 15%. I plan on doing this until I get rid of the car or it falls apart, whichever comes first.

Also, the oil monitor doesn't actually monitor your oil. It's based on an algorithm that takes into account rpm, load, fuel consumption, stop and go, etc ..

It's pretty accurate, assuming you reset it and you the appropriate oil when changing it.

Oil is relatively cheap. I do mine every time I rotate the tires....... at 5000 mile intervals.

On another forum someone had tested the oil at 5,000 miles and the analysis came back saying it could go another 5,000 with no problems. He also tested it again and they said the same thing.

Like Ish said the car calculated various factors to give ya a guestimate on the oil life. It doesn't actually test the oil.

If you're using Synthetic, you don't need to go every 5,000. 10,000 would be the time to change. I change the oil in all of my cars twice a year, whether they need it or not. Been doing that for many years and have never had an issue. Grant you, I don't put more than 20k a year on any vechicle.
Also, I don't go by the maintence reminders, or whatever they are called.

the OLM is fine. old school and do my 6K year by time instaed of mileage. I go 9 months instaed of up to 12 allowed. I figure that is 4 changes in 3 yrs or 1 more than needed. I also did one early...as I said old school. I would do it more often if I beat on it often or short trips were the norm.

full syn after 3k miles & FL-820 filter (larger than the FL500)
