2012 3.7 Standard Launching (2.73s)

I just got my underbody off, and am seriously considering going to the drag strip this Wednesday. I have searched the forum on a few occasions, but have not found anyone's advise for launching with a standard 3.7.

GT rim/tire
2.73 gearing

I know it will vary, but I was hoping someone would have figured out what works best for their similar setup, and I could go from there. On a sad note, I have noticed my MPG drop without my underbody by the butt wind tunnel- and gauges from the usual readings.

Can't wait to get it done and take it up there, hopefully I get some good runs and can compare the two. Any and all advice is welcome, have read a lot of previous threads in it, but will take your wisdom into consideration.

Start at 2k and work up until you blow the tires off then down a notch and go.

I feathered the clutch from around 3500 rpm and managed a 1.96 60'. On stock tires and 2.73's.

What did you end up running in the 1/4 with that 1.96 60' ?

I made two passes at the strip. My first was a 14.1 @ 102.4 with a 2.3 60' - track was wet.

The next pass I went 13.6 @ 105.2 with a 1.96 60'- Mods are Steeda CAI and 93 octane tune. Everything else is 100% stock.

Also manual trans if you didn't already know.

Appreciate the feedback. Will start with 3500. Getting pretty excited lol, except I'll have a full tank for the strip, which won't help.

Impressive time for 2.73s. Did the steeda CAI and tune make a big difference?

When I had the 2.73 I always turned the traction control off, then leave on the last yellow at about 2500 to prevent a bogg and feather the throttle to avoid spin. If you go 2.1 in the 60' your there. Street tires don't do well on the Drag Strip. Be aware of wheel hop issues. Good luck.

In a 3rd gear pull from 40 - 100 the Steeda CAI and 93 octane tune dropped over 2 seconds from stock. That is pretty good.

Here is a video comparison I made between stock and CAI/Tune -

Would say you say the Steeda CAI is worth the price tag?

I picked mine up when it was 20% off.

If you already have a CAI, I wouldn't waste money on one. If you don't however, I would say go for it .. when it's on sale.

It does require a tune .. so make sure you have one for their CAI.

Traction control off, 3500 RPMs. I will be there REAL early, but hopefully I will see some runs before me. I have never even been to a dragstrip in person.

You may want to grab some shoe polish or something. Most tracks will have you write a number on the window of your car.

I've been eyeballing their CAI for a while, its just low on the list.

I have the factory 2010+ GT cold air induction. I'm not sure if you class that as a 'CAI' or not.

I can't vouch for anything on the 4.6 but my 3.7 had the factory "CAI" and the Steeda is easily the better performing of the two.

I called a while back when I finished my underbody (before it was unsafe for high speed), and they talked about all their rules and what would be needed, but suggested to come down and do some runs- don't invest in gear unless I need it for the times I run. I know that is different, but I figured they would have mentioned something then about it.

This is Summit Raceway, in Norwalk, Ohio.

That answers my question.

I have the same intake you replaced with the Steeda CAI. The 2010 GT's was the first year to receive the new intake found on all 2011's+.

Two runs down, waiting for three. Blew the wheels off (figuratively) at 3400, again at 2000, but it was much easier to control. Going to do a little burnout and go again at 2000.

Heck yeah! So on my final run I finally broke 15 and hit 14.689. Four runs in for 7 bucks, can't complain. Heck of a time, met some cool people.

First run was 16 and change against a G8 GT. Second run was 15 and change with TC on/windows down (both accidentally), against a drag built car. Third run was lower 16. So final run with windows up but TC left on gave me this.

Nothing special, but glad I went out! Was a blast. Might go next week, but WILL be going when my underbody is done. More images to follow, wanted to post my poor results first lol.

Lol, I am the slower one each time by a LOT. My issue was spinning my tires. 3400 just blew em off, and I was sideways spinning first into second. Third run had the same issue, but wasn't as drastic even though I launched at 2000.

Mileage at the end was 20.1 down from 36+ getting there. I will be checking my gas and reducing that from my fill up lol, I won't be including this in my lifetime average. Just sitting in line getting there took me down to 33 and change. I used 1.68 gallons before getting there. So 14+ gallons of fuel, over 112+ extra pounds. Dinner nice Stang's there, photos attached. A real nice Porsche, too, but the guy looked like a DB so I didn't take a picture of his car. He sat in it the whole time.

If anyone sees anything from my results, would love to learn!

So in replaying the events yesterday, I realized something. Should the PSI in your tires be 55 for running on the strip?

I think that was an issue. Suggestions on drag PSI for the base GT rim/tire combo? I hear as low as 20, but that doesn't even seen safe with the heat. Would love to hear feedback.

Well 55 psi will heavily contribute to no traction... I know lots of people who go down to 20 psi but I leave mine at 35 for daily duty and track.

Work on the launch & get the 60' down. When ur leaving are u dumping the clutch or slipping it? I found it better to slip the clutch. & yea def drop that tire pressure..I've heard of 20psi but idk about that on street tires I usually run around 25-26psi. Seat time is gonna be ur best friend tho..learn what ur car likes!

I really appreciate the support, guys. I was slipping it, but slipping quickly, so might as well been dumping it. I will drop it down to 30ish PSI and start at 3k slipping. I couldn't believe I was so much faster with TC on lol. Anything else you guys notice from the slips?

I couldn't believe I was so much faster with TC on lol. Anything else you guys notice from the slips? Luke 11:9-10 “So I say to you ...*search and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
Yea it's crazy I ran better times with TC on in my 5.0 with it off I would completely blow the tires off! Another tip is to focus on the launch & not so much on reaction time..RT doesn't count against ur ETs so take ur time till u get a good launch down!
