Who would win??

A stock 2014 v6 automatic vs a stock 2014 manual. My friend wants to race me and I would like to know who has the better odds.

If your auto is stock,
And his manual is stock

He will win if he can drive.

Mines is auto, and yea I was just wondering, I felt like he would win also because I have added weight to my car. 20" rims and 2 10 inch subs in the trunk lol.

But why does he have the edge since he's a manual trans, if I'm in sport mode doesn't that make it practically the same?

I would have said auto because of faster shifts. But it's hard to disagree with Rapinator. Instead of sport mode I'd keep it in normal and let the car do the work, unless you have a lot of experience. Anyway, yeah your 20" rims and subs are going to seal your loss, unfortunately

Yes you are correct if the auto has been modded, tune and converter.

But stock for stock the manual will get the edge. Assuming good driver.

I agree with rap, if the manual driver knows how to shift well he should win. Tune that auto for quicker shift points and it might be a different story.

Well I have a stick shift. I don't know what or how "sport" mode means lol but who knows how or what shift points the auto comes with. I would think for fuel efficiency etc shift points on auto would be conservative. You don't have to worry about any of that with stick.

Gearing would matter. I know you said stock, but do either cars have the 3.31 optional gears? That would be a huge gain.

Sport mode is a button on the side of the shifter that will allow the person to shift manual like paddle shifters. Its a nice feature on the newer autos but its not instantaneous shifting, there is a little lag between command and the tranny actually shifting, but still a nice feature that gives the driver more control over his/her transmission.

I've heard of it, but never bothered to look into it since I've always driven manuals. Thanks for info though.

I like sport mode when I am just messing around. Change of pace when there's no traffic or I'm on a nice twisting empty country road.

My wife's fusion is the third car that we had with this feature. The 13 auto stang that I test drove before buying mine seemed to be on par or a tad better than our other cars we have had when it came to the select shift. I wouldn't call it a performance option but its definitely a lot of fun from time to time.

Your 2012 v6 came with sport mode? Mine doesn't have it unless there's something I don't know about. I thought they introduced it in 2013.

Not sure if it's called "sport mode" or not but I have the little button right below and I have gears 1-3 on PRND123 and I use the little button on it to shift

I could be totally wrong and that's not sport mode, but that's what others who have 2012's have told me sport mode is, I could have the wrong info. and it could be called something else though!

Just went out to my car hoping to find this, and flipped through the owner's manual too. Alas, I don't have it. Only button under my shifter is the hill assist (which turns off overdrive). You must have the performance package.

I have the 3.31 gears so maybe I do? I'm not really sure. Will investigate further tonight.

After some research I found that 2012 mustangs cannot have the performance package if they are automatic, only manuals were able to have it. Not sure if true or not, just read it on another forum. I have an automatic, so I guess I can't have the performance pack. I do have the 3.31 gears though, and on my shifter I have 1,2, and 3 under my PRND, and I use the little button under the big one to shift through those, and it lets me shift when I hold it. I am stumped. Hopefully someone can chime in on what that is.

U should find a way to distract him at the start line. He will then stall and by that time you're already done w the race. I mean all you have to do is punch the gas lol

Hands down the stock automatic is going to win over the manual driver majority of the time. Op unless your buddy is a professional driver or track races his manual on a weekly basis, no way he is gonna shift faster than the computer.

Fact is majority of people are just not that good at driving manaul and its too hit or miss. Its far easier to f up on manual by either missing shifts or tires spinning. Automatics don't have that stuff. Automatics don't miss shifts. You just nail your foot down to the floor and off she goes. Automatic for the win.

Shift points in automatics are very conservative (I'm assuming). If this is true, the stick shift manual transmission driver can shift at higher rpm points. And as someone posted earlier, there is a lag w engine to wheel power transfer in autos.

All you need is a tune bud, then it will be a different car from the shift points alone
