Question The "truth" behind vinyl?

I've really been going back and forth about getting some vinyl stripes put on my car. I have so far avoided putting ANYTHING but wax on the paint because I live in fear of the dreaded paint ghosting. I can't say for certain that I'll want to keep the stripes forever - and besides, vinyl doesnt last but 5-7 years at best. I can only imagine what the paint would look like under 7 year old vinyl. Of course there is the paint route - which if I had the money I'd do, but most places around here want 3-4x the cost of vinyl for some simple stripes. So - should I really be worried about it or just say it and go for it?

Go for it. I just had stripes put on both of my cars. In the process they removed the factory rocker stripes with no indication of paint fade whatsoever. The only caveat here is that both of mine are garage kept (which doesn't mean a lot since it is only night time when they are in there).

Yes paint fade is a definite concern. If you park out side all day or you live in a place where its sunny all time, this might be an issue for you. I would still do it.

^ I agree with stangman
Just do it, I love mine. If it's really that faded in 6 or 7 years who cares, you had them for that long. Get a new hood or just fix the paint. I will be getting a new hood eventually, as I'm sure a lot will. Cervini stalker plz

Well I live in Texas, so that about says it all there - blazing heat, the UV way of life, hail, wind, etc. It's not a pretty place for a car to live unfortunately. Luckily I park in a garage when I'm at work but outside at night. I'm really considering it - because that is true, if its that bad then I could just either replace the stripes, or maybe by then have the cash to get them painted on! I'll force my wife to watch Gone In 60 Seconds again and convince her the car made me do it.

BTW I cannot tell you how GLAD I am that my dealer didn't insist on putting the side stripe on there. To each his own, but of the 3 mustangs I've owned none of them have had the rocker stripes - and none ever will. Even if I had a GT500 or GT350 I'd rip those things off!

I'm not a fan of the rocker stripes either.

I'll probably be adding stripes to my ride as well. I've been thinking of something a little more custom than regular stripes. Has anyone tried plastidip stripes? It looks decent in the videos...... it would allow me to come up with something a little more unique.
