Motive Gears

Looking to get a set of Motive 3.73s. Anyone on here have them or recommended Ford Racing or another brand over Motive?

I have Ford racing 3:73 gears. Real happy with them. I don't really hear many people from this site talking about Motive gears. Always Ford racing gears.

You'll likely end up with more chatter and noise issues with Motive. Ford Racing all the way.

If you end up with noise with those, it's likely the install was crap, you didn't break them in long enough, or chinced out with the friction modifier.

Motive isn't bad either. They are a very big name in ring and pinion gears. However, I would do Ford Racing gears as well.

Most people break them in with 4 heat cycles of 25 miles. After that give them living hell.

I had the motive 3.73 in my 98 mustang. The whine was so bad that I swapped back to the oem 3.27. Ford racing all the way.

Forsure going with Ford Racing. And by heat cycles do you mean normal driving around town?

Word on the street is that Motive makes FR's ring and pinions. Regardless. You can't go wrong with Ford, Motive or Yukon.

If you're worried about gear noise. You're in the wrong hobby.

I have always had the mindset of, break it in how you intend to use it.

Yea drive it around normal for about 25 miles give or take, then let them cool down for at least 20 minutes

My source tells me Motive gears are made in Italy on some of the best gear cutting machinery made. I would have no problem running this product. Considering what it takes to make a set of gears, either one is a killer deal.

Haha.
You beat me to it!

The place that does my diff work is owned by a second generation "gear guy". That is precisely what he told me... They all come from the same machine and foundry company in Italy.

I'd have to agree. Before I did my gears I was researching both Motive and ford racing. Motive because I was interested in 3.90s that ford racing doesn't make available. The amount of gear whine from customers using Motive was enough to push me off motive and go with ford racing. 3k later with my Ford Racing 3.73s and I couldn't be happier. Most reputable gear places charge anywhere from 400-600$ labour, unless you want a specific ratio that Ford Racing does have why take a chance.

Yep, gear cutting is a very specific business. We had a plant by Midway Airport/Chicago called Aircraft Gear years ago and the tool makers that worked there were some of the best in the country. I ran a gear hobber during my apprenticeship and it scarred the hell out of me! Same machine to make milling cutters. A real confidence builder, that and form grinding threads in an engine lathe. All memories now.

+1, what would cause more whining complaints with motive? Would it be the material they use of the cut, or both? I've heard its the cut but I really don't know.

I was really considering getting motive because Ford doesn't carry the gears i'm looking for, but does the whining come from not properly breaking them in? I know once someone changes the gears the "Human Element" comes into play and they drive hard before the gears are broken in...

I broke my Built motor in hard, I broke my gears in hard, everything I do, does not change the way I drive the car. No problems either.
