Tune---Blown Engine???

Hello

Over and over here we discuss the idea of getting a tune on your car and voiding the warranty. Statements like this are used. If you tune your car and your engine blows-up the warranty will not be honored by the dealer.

So the question is this.

Has anyone ever had a blown up engine? Was the engine tuned?

I think this talk is nothing but a bunch of "The Sky may fall" or "If and Buts"

To be honest with you all I have owned plenty of cars and trucks over the last 35 years and I have had only one problem with an engine. F-250 with a V-10 engine and the engine seized up with about 120K miles.

Have you ever had an engine lock up? Was the engine/car tuned?

No we dont want answers like "I heard of a car having this happen or my second cousin best friends next door neighbor.

First hand experience with your own car only.

Go

So what was the cause?

Can you be a little more descriptive and give us some details? Were you racing or daily driving? Was it covered under warranty?

OP, please don't make your decision about tunes being safe based on Rapinators engine going boom. You have to know rap made 611 rwhp and around 650 rwtq. That's a bit more than just a tune. The piston went boom being the weak link in the 5.0 engine.

Got it right now - 2013 3.7, turbo - broke 2 pistons and maybe head gaskets. We think it was an overboost situation (and yes, it was tuned of course). We were supposed to be set up for 7 - 8 lbs of boost but on the last test drive the gauge went from vacuum of 20" to "0" on the boost and didn't move so not sure how much we were actually pushing; may be a bad boost controller so when I get the "autopsy" finished on the engine I plan to put an electronic controller with overboost protection on the new engine.

And no, Ford won't warranty it. The car that Ford built ran fine, the car I built is the one that failed.

Short answer yes, and yes. About 11 years ago I had a VW I thought was "fast". Motor compromised, "ECU Upgrade" wasn't the culprit.

I think I may know what tune he's running right now!

Sounds like the tune isn't the main culprit in these engine failures. I've always been afraid to do anything that couldn't be bolted on or off "just in case" something happened.... I keep wanting a turbo or supercharged engine but if it didn't come from the factory with it forget it IMO

Interesting but as I had thought. No engine failure and loss of warranty because of a tune.

Do you have stock or forged internals?

Bro, tunes are safe today. The trusted name tuning companies like Bama, Steeda, MPT, Lund, etc are awesome. No worries. Many of the guys that are blowing their engines up are hard core performance oriented and looking to push the envelope on cars maximum power. There track oriented, run there pony hard, push high amounts of boost and boom there goes the piston, rod etc.

You got to pay to play.

Question. Do 3.7s have rev limiters? And if so, do tunes bypass those?

I would bet money on it. Any modern engine would almost have to have some type of rev limiter built in.

My reason for asking is because if the rev limiter was shut off by the tuner, and a person blew their engine because it wasn't working, would that not void the warranty?

If & Butts.

Stick to the questions asked.

If you are stupid enough to rev your engine past 7000 rpms then you should not be driving. We are talking about our everyday cars. Not race cars

We are discussing our driver cars. Not race cars.

Plus if you are going over 7000 rpms then you have exceeded the speed limit by at least double.

Stick to the question.

Daily drivers with a tune have you blown up your engine?
