BAMA Tune - Speed Limit

Not sure if this topic has been covered, but can't seem to find anything so I apologize if it already is.

Currently the speed limit is set at 110 mph stock. Is it safe to turn it off with the bama tune? I heard the stories about the drive shafts breaking at 135mph so I upgraded mine to the aluminum one piece drive shaft from AM.

Thank you in advance

If you upgraded your drive shaft then you're perfectly fine. I've heard of people taking off the limiter and still having the stock DS and nothing went wrong.

The thing about that whole DS issue is there were 2 famous incidents of it happening that went viral on youtube. That doesn't make it a large dangerous issue.

Now that being said, is it safe to go 120+ on the stock 2 piece? Probably, but not for too long. It's a lot of stress on that joint.

Think the speed governor is 118 mph but close enough. I've accidentally reached 130 (I try to stay under 120) and of course I didn't have any problems but I didn't just stay at 130. I do tend to cruise at 120 though and haven't had any issues.

^ I'd agree with this. Once you add a One Piece Driveshaft you should be in good shape! The issue is with the "crappy" stock 2-piece driveshaft.

Hope you're enjoying your Bama tune and Aluminum DS. Let us know if we can be of any assistance!

I 'd say the stock drive shaft is only "crappy" if you plan to drive over the speed limits, or it's stock governed tune.

On this subject, I have to assume that the new 2015's sold in Europe (with autoban speed limits) will have a much higher governed speed limit in the stock tune, and perhaps different than what will be sold in the states.

Dan (at AM), do you know of this information yet with the 2015's?

Also, on your mod list, I don't see anything about tires.

I'd invest in some better rubber than the stock energy saver ones before going over the governed speed.

I've taken my car to around 150mph with stock DS... With a one piece, You can go ahead and request the limiter removed through a Bama Tune.

About 36 seconds from a dead stop and about 5600 feet of tarmac, give or take a second or two... I've only done it once, need new drive shaft.

A little over a Mile, quicker than I thought.

Same here. My car has the 2.73's and was in 4th gear around 6200 rpm, which is right at peak hp. The engine pulls surprisingly well to the top of 3rd gear - 130 MPH. 4th, 5th and 6th are to tall for the 2.73s.

*not sure if this is true or not* but I have heard that its safer for the driveshaft to go higher speeds (125/135 mph) if you have the stock 2.73 gears than it would be if you had just say 3.73's, which makes sense because the driveshaft isn't spinning as fast at those speeds with the 2.73's I think. I have also heard that's its pretty safe to go speeds above 120 with the 2.73's on the stock driveshaft. its when you upgrade the gears is when you could run into serious problems. Either way.. I would still be careful.

It makes some sense but the blown driveshaft issues that have arisen, I think had underlying causes that contributed to the failures. Not just they hit x mph or x rpm and kaboom.
