Beautiful day for the track

Me and the member FordMustang12 are at the drag strip in Milan, Michigan, just south of Ann Arbor. Our first time. Mine is the white one, he's got the black in the middle. He brought a friend, who is on the right. Temperature right now is 63.

63* haha, The old track paradox: The better the weather is for horsepower, the worse it is for traction. Good luck out there man.

So fun. I'm 602, FordMustang12 is 608. Very happy with my time considering v6, stock tune, 2.73 gears.

Good job getting under 14! Nice 60 for stock tune and 2.73's!

That looks like just really bad driver error coming off the line. His 60 is no offense terrible. You can see he eventually ended up going a few MPH faster than you but you just can't make that much time up.

Yep we know. He has nothing to be ashamed of. First time at the track, stick shift, whereas I have an auto so it's an easy launch. With practice he'll win for sure, easily.

Nothing to be ashamed of at all. People with the same set ups get times much worse than that and they have tracked before. With practice he will get low 13's very soon.

Did you try a run with everything on to see what difference it made?

No, I would have but they were doing competition races today and that set us way back for time. We only got the one run in. I'm with you though, I love to see controlled comparisons. Next time...

Traction control might have actually helped FordMustang12. You know, Ronnie once said he thinks 2.73 gears are best on the track for beginners like me, so that we get better launches. Wise old man, that Ronnie...

Really the purpose of this run was to have a base line measurement before I do gears+tune. But since I'm moving in 5 days I think I'll have to do another base line run at Texas World Speedway anyway, to eliminate track differences. And I might not get 63 deg days too often down there either...

Okay so here's a little background of my car. I have a 2012 v6 with air raid cai, borla s type axle back, mpt race tune for 93 octane, 3.31 gears and continental dws all season performance tires.
My start was really bad. I launched at about 3.5 rpm with advance traction control turned off and I swayed like crazy. I lost a second to get back in control. After that I was doing well. No miss shifts at all. This was my first time at track but it was really exciting

Here is the link to the video of my terrible launch.

I like lining up right in the tracks. You'll get a little better traction if you line up right in the tracks. You were a little cockeyed in there.

Congrats on the first day at the track!

With a little more practice you'll find the sweet spot for your launch, and you'll be consistently in the 13s.

Got lucky you didn't hit the wall,
This is why I believe people need alot more practice, b4 they make a trip to the track and try launching, in a manual.

I watched the video before I read his post, and was sure it was going to end with him eating wall.

Good save though.

Quick google search shows specs for factory 3.7L mustang. 1/4-mile 14.0 sec here: ยป Ford Mustang 0-60 1/4 mile fuel economy

So I'm 0.06sec faster than what these guys got. Maybe temperature and track conditions were really good today? Maybe I got lucky and made a perfect launch? Pretty ridiculous to just write it off as "timer was broke". So yeah, I will get bent out of shape for a completely baseless comment like that.

I didn't mean it as harsh and I'm sorry. From one PhD BME to another... I'm sorry. But I've seen hundreds of V6's, and your 60' is 5 standard deviations from the norm. It was broken.

To put this in context:

My 60': 2.1
Your 60': 1.65

You have me by 4 tenths off the line and I beat you by almost 8 tenths. That is 1.2 seconds faster than you from 60' - 1320'. Do you think I have THAT much more horsepower than you? No.

To be fair, we took my GF's first car to the track (2014 A6) and with just an air raid CAI and MPT tune I was struggling to hit below like a 2.2 60', and about 14.2 - 14.1 for about 7 passes straight. Staging at 1000-2000 rpms, coming right off idle, made no difference. A 1.6 60' is pretty hard to manage on the stock converter with 2.73s ... not saying it cant be done, but it is fairly outside the norm.

Now, that being said, this is in hot and muggy Houston weather. Not a crisp ~60-70* day, so who knows. The MPH looks right on point though, so that is a bit odd. I wouldn't get hung up on it, a track is just like a dyno, as long as you're getting faster then you're seeing improvements.

Forgiven. Sorry about yelling at you back. So what you're saying is maybe the 60' time was incorrect but the others are feasible? I guess that's possible. I will say however that my launch did feel perfect. Not a hint of chirp. And you'll see from the slow reaction time that I was really concentrating on hitting it right, maybe moreso than most people since this was my first time. Didn't just slam it to the floor, hit it quick but gradually.

Btw how did you know I have PhD in BME? I don't think I ever said that (but maybe I did, not accusing of you stalking, just curious). Got mine at Michigan, where did you go?
