Cobra radar detector

So I just bought a radar detector as well as a Bluetooth piece for aux line. Drove about 150 miles yesterday and it did beep pretty good at two cop locations. Have of you guys bought one of these or similar ? If so, please share or separate fact from myth.

I have my Whistler detector. It's good for the occasional cop that is running active on radar. But a lot are switching to methods that are more complex. The detector is a nice tool to have, it's paid for itself many times for me. BUT don't rely on it.

Why? In most states they aren't illegal. Now I have seen a couple states in the northeast where they technically are. But for the most part, you won't be hassled.

Now radar JAMMERS on the other hand, are very illegal in every state.

It's exactly what it sounds like. A box connected to sensors that interrupt radar signals or laser radar pointed at the vehicle.

It really depends. Cheap detectors aren't typically good. Mine was a mid range detector and gives me about half a mile warning typically on the highway. In the city, there's a lot of things that may reduce that distance.

If yours is not able to distinguish different radar bands and adapt them to which are false positives, it's going to get annoying.

I heard that cops are being equipped with laser detectors which make the radar detectors obsolete. I would have to look up the source of this claim when I get home later.

They are moving to more advanced radar that isn't always on, which the detector relies on. As I said, nowdays don't rely on it. But for country roads, poorer areas, and areas that just plain don't have the most up to date police tech, they're still helpful.

Radar jammers are in fact illegal in every state. The FCC did that. Laser Jammers are legal in most states.

Radar detectors are only illegal for cars in Virginia and Washington D.C..and on military bases. Perfectly legal everywhere else unless you are a tractor trailer / commercial vehicle (not pickups). So even in NY, sometimes the SP will use Radar Detector Detectors or RDD, but only to catch truck drivers using them.

Some will debate which is best but my vote goes for the Escort MAX or Redline. Max for filtering out the false alarms (due to all the lane assist and radar on cars now), and the Redline for range. The Redline is also stealth in that it can't be detected by RDDs. My Redline has saved me many times in the last month. They are not cheap though but can be bought with 12 payments from Escort directly.

Cheap doesn't equate to good IMO.

Correct. Even with a good detector (usually $300-500), if it saves you one or two tickets, it's paid for itself. Even more over if you think about what your insurance will be hiked up to with a ticket on your record.

It's more about research and finding out how it stacks up. My research said my Whistler was the best bang for my buck for mid-range detectors.

Most radars and lasers are instant on now, and the detectors can help on busy roads. Laser detectors detect when the beam has struck your car or very close to it....not much help.

+1 I also run the escort redline. That thing is a beast and does not lie. It picks police radar signals out of
Anything else and alerts that signal only. It's saved me 5-6 times when speeding in the interstate. Picked them up usually .5 to a mile a way in curves and stuff as I live in mountainous terrain.

Yeah actually I've had several "cheap" ones that weren't worth a ****!! Just giving my experience. My girlfriend had a valentine one and I had a whistler and she picked up a police running radar about 600 yards up the road and mine never went off. So. That's only one time it didn't go off when I KNEW they were using radar. I had three different ones. A cobra a whistler and something else I can't remember but they usually
Only picked up store alarms or at the last second a
Police radar.

I have an Escort SOLO-2

This thing works great and runs on "AA" batteries. It pick up K-band a very long time before reaching the police car. It picks up radar that is coming up behind you.
Of course "I NEVER SPEED" so I don't really need to rely on it.
they now have a SOLO-3 out but I don't see how it could be any better then what i have.

KA here too, occasional k from small towns and no x. I have also segmented my redline to only scan the 3 most used KA bands. I have detected 2 miles out on NYSP KA here.

X is typically like the radar signs in construction areas and house alarms. Most police around here are KA or the Ka.12 or what have you variants.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. I have owned close to 10 different radar detectors and have found that the cheaper detectors (under $300) don't have nearly the same detection that my expensive ones do.

According to my truck driving father, Valentine and Escort are the best. You can buy a used Valentine off eBay, and pay $40 to valentine and they will virtually rebuild it for you, just make sure it still has the serial number on it. Escort does something similar.

I bought a cobra and it's gone off at lights and sirens but not all the time I'm assuming the cops have radar off

Valintine One, Mirror Tap, Mirror bracket makes a very neat package for the car, no cords dangling and can easily be removed..I have had other radar detectors but this one is really sensitive, have seen many cars pass me up only to be pulled over a half a mile ahead of me, this can pick up radar 800 yards in front, side, and behind..if you get hit with instant on there is no hope…used ones sell for almost as much as new ones….just ask a long drive trucker and 9 out of ten have a Valintine One. All three installed $575.00…the price of 3 tickets… if you like to go 10 miles over the speed limit, I would advise getting one…PS it really lets you know when city driving where the radar is hanging around.
