Agreed. Why not track a stock car? It's the sport and driver that counts.

Going stock also gives you a baseline, similar to a dyno. This is especially useful with a car as consistent as these autos seem to be.

yeah, idk why people are all "why bother when it's stock?" why? because it's fun. that's why. we don't do it on the streets, we'll take it to the track so it's safer. that's a pretty dumb mentality to have, guys.

When I was completely showroom stock I went and my best run was 14.44 @ 99. So it's really nice to see the gains.

I found something strange that might apply to you. If you have after market wheels that might be the problem. After running with stock wheels for my first ever drag run I got 13.294's with 3.73's, MPT tune, and shorty headers(if they work lol). Then I tried The same setup but with 275 35 18. I ran a whopping 13.8~14.1. I almost cried after spending money on new rims and tires. I think it was due to how small the wall was(35mm) The stock tires are 65mm so it can squat and not just be a hard piece of rubber. Next day I sold the rims and tires to a 2001 v6 lol. Then went back to stock wheels and ran a better time.. it was crazy that the extra tread slowed me down, but makes more sense now. If the rain stops I just got my BMR relocation brackets installed and hope to run 13.1

i'd be willing to bet it was the weight more than the tread. Most aftermarket rims that are cheap are not light, and the tiny V6 stockers dont weigh much.

Among other differences, with the stock V6 rims I ran the 14.4, with the 245/45/19s I ran 13.8 and with the 255/40/19s I ran 13.6.

The 255/40/19s are about 4lbs lighter per tire than the 245/45/19s, and also smaller overall diameter, effectively gearing my car down. So that's helped.

I guess let me clarify. If you are tracking for baselines and just for fun, then yea that makes sense.

My point, is that some people race down the track to see if they can beat the guy next to them. If you are stock, then yes it may be fun. But some people get b*** hurt when they don't cross the line before the other. And that, just seems not worth it to me if you know what your limits are compared to the other.

True! It also took off slower, Almost like it was not getting grip with that much tread. I was looking into different rims and using a tire calculator to see what size would match up to the size as the stock ones. Not so much the specs of the stock ones, but the... let me just give an example: 215 65 17 ~ 255 45 19, but the 19 has more tread and less wall.

I wish Bama listed the weights of the Rims and stuff. I could not find anything on their site when I was looking at the rims similar to the 2014 GT500.

I have a thread in the wheel and tire section where I'm trying to get as many wheel weights as possible.

Hopefully the link works. I'm doing this from my phone and this forum kind of sucks with this.

There's not much on it now, but the more we can add the better. It could be a pretty valuable tool.

Truth.

Part of my logic is because it's so much easier to get it to its limits. In fast cars it's too scary to get to the limits lol.

You can use every ounce of a slow car.

My first car was a 2001 Elantra. I drove the piss out of that thing and had a blast.

Wheel Weight - Mustang Evolution

Thanks for the link. I see post #9 includes the 13/14 GT/CS rims. Since these are almost the same as the 13/14 V6 PP ones, minus cosmetic changes, I would assume these are about the same weight.

Yeah I think that's a fair assessment.

It's also good to look at tires weights. The same size tires can vary in weight by a few pounds.

True. But at least I have an idea now. So if I need to shop for wheels in the future, I'd know to stay away from the ~58 lb+ section if I want to make any improvement on the weight side. LOL!

idk, my 5.0 was a high 11 second car, my miata is likely mid 15s downhill with a back wind i'd get bored before i got to the end haha.

Now in just every day goofing off, yes lol absolutely a low power car can be a blast.

Each have their own application lol.

I think what it comes down to more than anything is the miata inspires the confidence to do so, whether or not it actually can, which is what yall were getting at that "lesser" cars are more fun to wring out because its absolutely true. Enough thread jack though.

Azure, some people won't get it or they don't want to get it. Nothing wrong with taking a stock car to a track.

Bracket racing in a stock car can be a ton of fun. You know it has kind of a science to it when you need to dial in your time cause you don't want to give a slower car that much of an advantage out of the hole and you want to have an out the hole advantage when next to a faster car. Oh and don't forget to reset the time if it starts getting darker or cooler out.
