Am I being ripped off? - Gear Swap

So heres the deal. I am trying to find a shop that will install some 3.73 gears in my car. I called one shop and they quoted me at $800 for parts and labor. The guy told me it would take 5 hours worth of labor at $96/hr, thats $480 in just labor... I am also having difficulty finding a shop that will actually do the install. I called two other shops one said they would not do it and the other told me he would call me back since they do not do gear swaps normally. If I am being ripped off... Does anyone know of a good shop that can do the instal in the California, bay area?

In Hayward I've heard that a place called Pete's Gear Shop is good. I got my gears done in Sacramento by Jaws gear and axle for $360 labor and I provided all parts. Took about the same amount of time.

Gears is usually something you pay as much in labor as in materials, if not more on labor.

$360 isn't bad, much better than the quotes I am getting. I am in Livermore, so Sacramento is only about an hour away. I'll give them a call when I get a chance. Thanks!

Got my gears, rebuild kit, traction lok kit, diff cover and rear axle bearings and seals for $360. If a shop is hesitant to tackle gears, DO NOT take it to them. It means they have no experience. This is a precision job.

Exactly, this goes for everything not just gears. If a shop is hesitant on a job, never bother doing business with them. You're paying for a quality job not a crappy one.

price can vary where you live but honestly If I knew a shop had a good reputation I wouldn't have an issue paying any extra 100-200 dollars knowing that it will be quality work and they will stand behind their work. As someone said unless they know what their doing and set them up just right they will whine and be more prone to breaking.

In Phoenix I was Quoted $250 for the install if I bought my own parts. $350 with a set of used gears (they have them), & $450 with new gears. It would be $550 if I have them install new wheel bearing hubs...which they recommend. Going to have mine installed right after New Years. Got to get my new motor in 1st. Then the gears & after 1st oil change...a Chip & Tune.
Sounds like some places are pretty high priced to me. I called like 5 shops in the area & they were all close in their pricing. At $800 I'd go pull a complete rear end from a junk yard with 3:73's in it & only pay $150. Or...I might just install them myself. I watched someone do it once on an axle that was out of the car. Took him about 30-45 minutes & it didn't look all that hard. But that's me...I take chances here & there. Sometimes it gets me...some times it don't. But I learn something new every time I try something & I'm enjoying the experience of doing it & learning exactly how each part works.

You have a different car though. And I don't believe yours is the 8.8 rear end. For the 2011+ guys, a junk yard really isn't an option unless you get very lucky.

Honestly, if you can follow directions and have a decent set of hand tools and a few gauges/specialty tools that aren't very much $$$ you can DIY no problem. Ppl treat it like some sort of black art and shops know this and charge out the *** because of it. I once was quoted $700 for labor alone on gears. That is one of the only times I literally laughed at the guy and walked out as much as ppl say "I laughed and walked out" in the interwebz to sound cool.

Around here the going rate seems to be $600 parts and labor which is fair for a mechanic figuring it might take 2-3 hours depending on how crudded up the underside of the car is.
