Convertible top not fitting right after replacement

One of the little bungee straps that you don't see ordinarily was about half torn so I took it to the dealer. The dealer said they would replace the top (still in warranty period). Though I thought it was a bit excessive and thought the little bungee could be fixed, I agreed. After all, who would say no to a new top? it seems they outsource the top repairs as most dealers do since there is not that much call to work on them.

I picked up the car and it looked great. I was told not to lower the top for a week so it could properly stretch to fit. Within a couple of days I noticed that the back top corner of the door was rubbing on the top when I opened it. If you waited for the window to lower itself, it would clear - but to me opening a car door should not be a 2-step process. I waited a few days to contact the dealer as I wanted to lower the top and see how that went.

I will post pics later today that clearly indicate an inconsistent fit from one side to the other. it shows against the weather stripping over the window. Either the top is mis-installed or the top, itself, has a manufacturing defect.

When lowered and driving I noticed that there is a fluttering of the material at the leading edge of the top. I cant swear that this is new but I don't recall ever seeing it before. Those of you with convertibles, please look at yours and respond.

I contacted the dealer and, as always, they were courteous and eager to help. I made an appointment and dropped off the car. I called at the end of the day to see how things were going and if my car was ready. They said things were not going so well in that the repair company told them everything was good and this is how it is supposed to be so there is nothing else they can do. How do I go about getting real results?? it should not be my word against the repair company.

I am really getting steamed. Those of you that follow the forum realize my car has been far from trouble free. Pinion gear, electrical issues, tail light, rear control bar, water pump, top, etc. all in less than 30,000 miles... At least to this point the dealer was standing by me...not any more.

Post some pics so I can compare to mine. Once I see what you are taking a picture of, I will do the same.

Convertible top not fitting right after replacement

Your window is up all the way? Mine sits on the outside of the wide piece of weatherstripping. The window only lowers to clear the top I believe. Aren't there other Mustang convertibles sitting in the dealer lot you can compare to with them?

The windows are all the way up but they are in the 'dropped down' position to clear the top. The one on passenger side clears. The window on the driver's side rubs the top.

As for the 'look at others on the lot' issue - I thought of that too. The service center is about 3/8 mile from the 'lot' so there aren't others to look at too easily. I am thinking about going to another dealer (I checked - they use a different top company) to see if they can resolve it but I am afraid they will have the attitude of 'you took it to the other dealer and they already got paid to fix it - take it back to them.' The other dealer that I have not been to also has more readily available on the lot and a larger new car inventory.

Thoughts?

Are you saying the door is closed all the way, which it appears to be in the picture, but they are in the dropped down position, so when you open the door they don't drop any lower? If so, something is definitely not right.

It's warranty work, Ford is Ford no matter what dealer you go to. If you aren't getting any satisfaction at the dealer you originally went to I would definitely try another and let them know you aren't getting any satisfaction. Maybe they will be willing to get it resolved for you and let the dealerships figure out how cost will be handled between themselves. To me, that's their problem, you aren't responsible for any of it.

Guess I'll try the other dealer and just see how it goes. As for the door, neither door is closed all the way. they are closed to the 'first latch' so that the window stays in the open/down position. The company that changed the top stated that opening my door should be a 2-step process wherein you unlatch it and wait for the window to drop, then swing it open. How stupid!!

The company that replaced the top is trying to cover their incompetences. Could you imagine if you had to teach every passenger who gets in and out of your car how to do such a simple task? Did you ask them how come getting in and out of your car has always been a 1-step process, like every other Mustang owner? That window comes down so fast you shouldn't have to wait.

Contact the Area Dealer Representative and ask for a meeting. Ford is probably contracting that job out to a local business. There is no reason why you should have to keep going to different dealers to get your car fixed.

Update - this has now been an issue for 4 months. I have had the car at the dealer more than 10 times. They have repeatedly taken photos, measurements, etc. They have tried to blame the windows not lowering far enough or fast enough. They have had different 'specialists' look at it and Ford corporate sent me an email last week saying they really have no clue what the problem is or how to fix it. Unbelievable. I found three very reputable convertible companies near me - one of which did some upholstery work for me more than a decade ago. I picked up my car Saturday morning and took it to that company. The owner looked at my car for about 3 minutes, took a couple of measurements (different than those previously taken) and promptly said "it was installed about 1/2" to the left of center". This is exactly what I thought all along but could not figure out how to prove it. He knew! Coincidently, this shop does the tops for the other Ford dealer location of the same owner that I have been dealing with.

FYI - the telling measurement was from the seam on each side to the bottom of the bow on that side. I had him write up a proposal and sent it to Ford yesterday. Other interesting thing is that the Ford top has a one year warranty. The aftermarket top he prefers to use is 6 year with a lifetime glass separation warranty. I am hoping Ford will step up and pay him to redo it with his top, given the amount of headache they have put me through and the fact that they will never have to hear from me about this subject again.

What part got them to replace the new top? And we're you allowed to choose any color replacement you wanted or did you have to get the same?

FINALLY RESOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took almost seven months but Ford finally stepped up and replaced the top again this week. I just picked it up yesterday. I appreciate the fact that they finally did it and I think it was primarily a waiting game to see if I would go away (I didn't). I do, however, resent the fact that it took more than a dozen trips to the dealer and 7 months, and numerous emails and pictures, etc. At one time they tried to buy me off by offering money and claiming it could not be fixed and there was actually nothing wrong. I made 3 or 4 offers that I doubted they would accept. When this happened and I refused their counter offers, I told them to forget all the other options...FIX MY CAR. So they finally did! I guess all is well that ends well but it sure caused a lot of heartache and inconvenience and goodwill.

I think I know what dealer your talking about. (The one on Mansell Rd)

Dang I'm sorry to hear they gave you the run around. I've always had great luck with them, but not much done under warranty with them.

To the contrary, the dealer has been trying to help from the beginning but Ford corporate would not pay. Truth of the matter is that the dealer should have stepped up long ago since it was their subcontractor that screwed up to begin with. I'm a contractor- if my subcontractor screws up it is up too me to make it right. I don't have a big corporate entity to fall back on.

As i said though, i have had a bunch of warranty work done by the dealer previously mentioned and the have always been great with this one exception.

top replacement

sbbamafan;
I too had the top replaced under warranty. The dealer got the top in from Ford but had a local install it. Same week wait. Looked pretty good when I got it back (only 1day for that). I noticed the flutter when down like you did. I also noticed the right side was a bit higher when closed and thought I heard more wind noise on that side. I talked to my rep and he said to bring it by so they could see if something could be done. I hit that side with my hand a couple times and it didn't move much but I don't hear the wind as I did. I'm leaving well enough alone at this point but they are aware of it. Sad how we expect things to be perfect and only get disappointed.
