My car went through the same thing.. It's just the brand new engine, it's normal. My mustang has almost 2700 miles and when I go over 100 I get that smell a little bit.

When I run mine hard, I get a smell from the gearbox of hot gear oil. Manual transmissions do that. It's normal.

700 miles and your flogging it ??????????????????

This is why I would never buy a used car. "ANY CAR"
700 miles is really no time to be running your car like that.
You will probably end up with an oil burner.

DUH !!! I think you said 700 miles.
Even if it was 1,000 miles it is way to soon to run your car that hard.

Eh, Don't worry about that too much... If you're like my dad and I, It wouldn't matter.

Trading in every 2 years.... LOL.

Plus, 4,000 RPM at 700 miles is not bad as long as you don't do it every day. The first 500 miles is where you'd generally keep it under 3,000-3,500 RPM's range.

Of course, As I said before if it's not an everyday thing. It's recommended to go easy on your car for the first 2,500-5,000 miles.

P.S. I had leased a 2014 Kia Optima SXL Turbo and had it for 2 weeks, I got it from 15 miles until 650 miles and abused the turbo so hard... I would take it to 6K RPM and all, But then again I didn't keep it. =P!

Eh no real harm on these modern motors to give them a few hundred miles of varied rpms and then drive it however you like. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Can someone explain why you can't run your car over 4k before 1000 miles

I know with a Manual Transmission New car you have to let the clutch set in before you go wild on it otherwise you can affect it drastically. Automatic not sure though.

You just proved his point. IDK if you were joking or not but the fact is that a lot of people have that mindset. They buy a new and know they will buy a new one in 2-3 years so if anything major happens it will be covered by the warranty. And while they may not abuse the car necessarily, they definitely don't do what is in the best interest of the car long term.

People like me are the reason I don't buy used cars.

I enjoy every last ounce out of my car.

It's called a break in period.

It's a time to let everything settle. Let's piston rings set to cylinder walls and all of that good stuff. It's not really talked about with newer cars as much though because tolerances are much tighter off the assembly line than they were years ago. Not much breaking in is needed.

There are 2 trains of thought on break in period. Baby it, or drive it like you stole it. This is a debate that will go on and on and on though.

Honestly, either way you'll be fine.

I bought my 2007 F150 brand new and have driven it hard since day one. I have never had any problems with it and it doesn't burn oil either. I have over 77000 miles on it and it runs great. I've also had a tune on it for the last 35000 miles with NO issues.

My 2014 V6 has that same "smell" after WOT but I have just learned to live with it.

Yeah, I've always driven hard and never had a problem with any car I've owned.

Cars are a lot different now.

Aren't most new engine "broken in" at the factory? I thought they ran all the new motors for a bit to set rings etc?

Random trivia - each new GTR is raced around nissan a track by a professional racer taken to red line and pushed to its limits before the car is shipped.

From what I've heard these motors see rpms that you will never see

I agree with Vig in the it probablly doesn't matter. But I followed the manual and avoided beating on it for the 1st 1K. I gradually increased max rpm till then and avoided long steady rpm runs...still think it don't matter choose the one that helps you sleep. Old school here changed oil @ 750 miles and again at 3K again choose to make yourself happy.

Important: check your oil often and enjoy the ride!

all the components are brand new and have to set in. when you do your first oil change you may notice alot of metal flakes in it. that ist he engine breaking in. it happens on any car and is why i always use an oil drain plug with a magnet on the end of it to collect that stuff.
