BBK 73MM Throttle Body

Hey all, I have the opportunity to purchase a BBK 73MM Throttle Body brand new for around $280 shipped. I have always been interested in seeing if it was worth it or not and have been very curious about this item and what if any performance gains are to be had. Some say none, some swear by it and love them.
They are up for $400 on AM which is why I have never bought one.
I can buy this from a main name retailer for the $280 too. Don't want to say what name and do a company price comparison, not what this thread is for.
Does anyone have this or know anything about them? Really wanna get this if it will help my car out . It will be added to the stock pile of things to be installed once my dad is home from the hospital !! Thanks in advance !

Thumbs up BBK 73mm...

Hey GB,
I have one and I won't say there were any earth-shattering (or even tremendously noticeable gains) but I will say there is a nice low drone that comes out at idle. Gives it a nice beefy sound sitting in a drive-thru.

I look at it like this, there are plenty of upgrades we make to our cars that are for the very sake of aesthetics and given this is the main entry point to the engine, it has to help at some level. I am guessing (and from what I have seen elsewhere), it really shines when combined with a tune. My guess is, at the higher RPMs is where it will really be noticeable.

I do believe I can feel a difference but I have made a few small improvements so without a dyne to measure it, you probably wouldn't know it but I like to think it has a little more kick.

Hope that helps,
Tobey

There's the alternative of swapping to a GT 80mm throttle body. Those are anywhere from $90-$150 on ebay. It requires some modifications but nothing too crazy. You'd have to data log and dial in the tune though. That's the route I think I will go.

If I can get it for $280 shipped with a warranty and everything brand new, I think that's more my thing than buying a GT one and playing with it and having to play with the tune for an extra $150. Not too good with custom fab stuff I have little to no experience.
For $280 I'm really considering this.

I have one with an Airraid CAI. Just more of a pain to get it to fit.

I actually put the connector on the bbk throttle body before attaching it to the intake manifold.

For the price though you can buy other mods. My build is all towards maxing it out on FI plus I got a huge discount.

Fission, how do you like the throttle body? Any increased acceleration or noticeable change? Any sound change either? Literally the last thing I can do that's bolt on to my car lol

Hard to tell. I bought literally while I was on the dyno to make 300rwhp. Haven't had it off the car so I really couldn't say. So yeah I think I got like 7hp out of it but it's just a number. Throttle response isn't anymore noticeable than just a cai.

I have the BBK 73mm TB and I got minew for around the same price. At that price I think it's a worthwhile mod. I noticed better throttle response and a better overall feel going through the rims but I also have a Steeda CAI and ported upper/lower intake manifolds. So the TB helped to tie everything together and improved airflow.

True that. I have BMR LCA's waiting to go on. The other option is instead of the Throttle body , relocation brackets and an UCA with a rear sway bar.
I'm feeling like the LCA's will be enough for me I don't track my car.
Or I keep saving for my front end conversion lol. Just hard to save with mod money burning a hole in my pocket

I suggest you go for it!

73MM TB and Airaid CAI really changed the sound a LOT.

Listen to this, If you car about the sound your engine is producing...

This was before I got headers and x-pipe installed, So just with the CAI and TB.

Thank you! Just responded.

Anyone with shorty headers and the throttle body notice a difference after installing them?

Even before an MPT tune, I noticed much better response, When I went WOT, Before the shorty headers.

The shorty headers just added a deeper sound to the car, no real big noticeable difference though.

Although I don't regret adding them, Because in my personal opinion, They changed the car drastically and make it much more fun to drive... having eargasms every now and then =P

Do it.

Yep I have both and this is exactly right. I did notice more low end performance with the shorty headers but like RushGotti said DO IT!

Gonna be ordering the throttle body tomorrow... Quick question. How does it fit on the airaid CAI? I've seen things saying it will not fit. I have an airaid.

That's probably th e throttle body spacer you're thinking of. Airraid states the spacer won't work with their CAI. The new throttle body is only bigger in diameter, otherwise it's the same.

The rubber coupler will be a tighter fit though.

Ok cool I was reading the reviews on AM and people were saying it would not fit.
The reviews on AM 99% of the people have no idea what they are talking about it seems lol.
My view on the throttle body spacer is it is complete Bs and will net you 0 gains. Correct?

Yes and no. It will give some low end grunt, but the swirling air will cause turbulence in the plenum and you'll start to choke then engine a bit on the upper powerband. You end up losing more in the upper end than you gain on the lower.

I have basically no mechanical skill and I installed this Throttle Bpdy along with the Airraid CAI I already had by myself.
If you put the rubber fitting (that connects the intake tube) on the throttle body before you install it on your car, it is 100 times easier. Had to lube it up too lol.

Don't know if there is even enough room for that spacer honestly. Intake filter is touching the wall of the box.

You feel most gains from 3k and on. But you for sure feel it

Yeah I figure it won't take more than 30-45 minutes to install the throttle body.
The shorty headers will take about..... 6 hours lol. I'll do the throttle body while my buddy works on the headers... LOL

Could always just get a new coupler to avoid any issues. They're like $20.
