3.7 gas

Read this on a review of the 3.7 engine -

"What this means in performance terms is that, if the owner uses premium or race gas on weekends, the engine should make considerably more power and torque than the numbers quoted here, which are the product of standard SAE dynamometer laboratory testing procedures and not real-world driving."

Page 2 - 2011 Ford Mustang V6 Engine - Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords

So does this mean that if we use higher octane gas we get better performance?

Everything I've read up until now has led me to believe that anything higher than 87 (I believe) is a waste of money.

Yes, it will produce more power, I wouldn't call it " considerably" more, but our cars will adjust timing for higher octane fuel. These engines are not like yesteryears where higher octane wouldn't increase power unless its was tuned for it and required higher octane.

My car ran like junk stock on 87. Went to 91 before I even tuned it and haven't looked back.

I'd do 93 if it was remotely accessible around here.

3.7 gas

Yeah, gas prices in the DC area are still around 3.30-3.40. The only time I've seen gas under 3 bucks is when I went to Charlottesville a month ago. The gas was 2.99 and I almost shat myself.

Keep in mind, the changes are not linear. That is not to say, 110 will net more power than 100, will net more power than 98, will net more power than 93... The cars do have a window in which they are allowed to adjust timing, but once they reach that limit obviously they cant add more. However, you are correct, you will see better performance with good gas.

2.95 for 93! Buy some barrels of it and send some here. I'll pay for the shipping, and however many you buy!

Do I need to empty the tank and refill? Or can I start with premium with a half tank regular in there. Does it matter that my first 10,000 miles have all been with 87?

Doesn't matter for any of what you stated. You can start using premium now, even with half a tank of 87, and regardless of milage

Murder rates also rise when ice cream sales are high. Coincidence?

I had no difference in performance or MPG at all

When I tried a few tank fulls of 93 Shell I had about the same MPG as when I was running 87 octane Shell. My car did not seem to run any better or faster. All I found was I was wasting a lot of $$$$$ at around 50 cents a gallon more for 93 octane. I now just stick with 87 octane and my Mustang runs perfect and has no sluggishness at all.
I'm sure it would be different if I had a Tuner like a Bama or Steeda unit but my Mustang is just a standard CPU. with a set of Magnaflow streets and an AirAid CAI.

Maybe someday I'll get a tuner but for now I'm pretty happy with the way my 3.7 V6 runs.

Hard to miss what you've never had. I got a 93 tune, CAI, and 3.73s all at the same time. What a change!!!

I'll probably get one after my warranty's are expired.

I want to get an Aluminum driveshaft next. I probably don't need it but I want one anyway.

After that it will probably be shorty headers.

Will somebody please send me a bucket load of $$$$$$$$$$$ to pay for all of this. I spent all of mine when I went to the American Muscle show in Pennsylvania.

I know, the $$$$$$$$$$ I wasted going to that show could have paid for some mods. Ha! Ha !

back on topic.....I started with 87 then after 7K went to premium and my mpg went up 1-2 mpg which was enough to make it a $ per mile even so I kept it up even though my butt dyno didn't register a differance. I recently tried the experiment the other way and went back to regular. My mpg stayed the same. Part of the problem was (I think) that my mpg flucuates from 21-24 depending on season/driving so it's not easy to figure what is gas and what is driving. I tend to run 87 unless I'm going on a real run.

Not only should you see slightly better mpg with 93 octane, but your car should produce more power, that being said it should be taken with a grain of salt as it won't be a significant gain, like if you were also tuning it to 93. These cars will advance and ****** timing automatically, not opinions but facts that have been covered many times in just this forum alone. There is nothing wrong with running 87 in our cars, it will run and perform normally as advertised by ford, but if your wanting something a little more, 93 will make a slight difference in performance.
