do mufflers need to be carb legal?

so im in an auto technician class and we are allowed to work on our own cars. hes always rejecting peoples wishes to put on parts such as cold air intakes even because they dont have a carb number. im in california if that makes any difference, but i have two cherry bomb extreme mufflers i really want to get on her before haloween so me and my buddies can go cruising, loudly..
do i need to worry about him saying no to my mufflers or should i be alright?

thanks so much cant wait for replies!!

As long as the car maintains a decibel level of 95db or below it is legal.

I would ask the instructor....CA is a nice state to visit but even I might have problems with some of their laws.

I think it's absolutely pointless on our cars, because they burn way cleaner than the cars that cats originated on.

Yes. Probably since the 4.6 3v's were introduced, but definitely no need on the cyclone 3.7 and the coyote. I'd take them off if it wasn't an insane fine.

Afraid of a little $25,000 fine. And just for record, it is anything other than oem or oem replacement in their original location also, so High Flow cats are illegal also

Yeah, I knew that. I think that the law should allow high flows, or at least the factory ones in a different location, so we can run longtubes legally.

Yeah, if i could, I'd get long tubes, a shorty o/r H pipe, and Lethal Performance OTA pipes to go with my RTR axleback.

Now, looks like I'll get the Boss H pipe and side exhaust, maybe OTA pipes, and if I think it's too loud for long trips, QTP electric cutouts.

I don't have really any money right now, and I'm saving for suspension first.

Even though I live where there is not an Emissions testing my Exhaust is still 49 state legal and is still Federal legal.
I have a friend in NC that passed Emissions twice with his High Flow cats on his F-150 and was written for other than OEM Cats by a NC state trooper. $15000 fine reduces to $1500 after putting all the OEM stuff back on. That fine is more than I have in my still legal exhaust.

Meaning you have to be under 95db even during WOT?! I don't think even stock mufflers are going to be that quite, especially the ones that come on manual cars.

95db is about the equivalent of a jack hammer at 50 feet.

Just don't Rev your car in public places where it isn't appropriate like a jerk ( except for car shows, tracks etc) and you won't have to worry about that fine because no police will hassle you.

Well that is, for those of us not living in test states.

Oh absolutely not, I hate revving for no reason and people those who do in public places. Kind of a ****** bag attitude imo lol. When I rev, it's usually floored on a closed road.

Really i've never had an issue. I'm sure my car is louder than 95 decibels. I've even revved it all the way right near a cop when someone cut me off and nothing happened. Get the exhaust you want and don't look back.
