Breaking In Gears

Finally found someone reliable to install my gears for 300 plus tax. Not the 750 I was quoted before haha.

Anyway, I know I need to break the gears in before going hard on them. But what about highway driving? Because I will have to travel about an hour to get them installed.

Would it be smarter to do a few heat cycles first before driving home? Say 2 25 mile cruises

This. Just simple daily driving, don't do any hard pulls for 100-150 miles and you should be fine.

200-300 miles is good to break them in before going WOT on them. I think i went around 290 miles before i went WOT on mine.

Alright. And an 8 hour road trip 4 days after install won't hurt me will it? Should be able to put on 100-200 miles by the time I leave for the trip

I did 4 heat cycles of 25 miles each. After that I proceeded to beat the crap out of the gears.

I'm going to wait until 200 miles just to be safe. Considering that I don't have the money to buy another set if I f*** these up

Just saw this thread. How did you get a $300 install on gears? Every place I talk to says I need to pay for an install AND tuner to recalibrate the speedometer, bringing the total price of the gear install to around $800 not including the gears.

Well they aren't necessarily wrong. You will have to recalibrate the speedo. So I recommend investing in a tuner before you think about gears. It makes life a lot easier down the road.

I already have a tuner fot Speedo and you just need to find someone that does it regularly/knows what they are doing. Other places quotes were a lot more hours. One said it would be an 8 hour install

I went in for an oil change at my local ford dealership. While I was waiting, I asked them how much a gear install would be (just for giggles, had no intention of getting it done there) and they quoted me $1300 just for the install.

Ouch, that's the price of a 3.7 motor on eBay with like 20,000 miles

If you get Ford Racing gears they have a phosphate coating on them. While the coating is wearing off it produces more heat than normal, this is the reason for the cool-down period every 25 miles. After 100 miles the gear oil should be changed to get rid of the phosphate. You don't want to put premium gear oil (like royal purple) in when you get the gears changed. Only after the first 100 miles.

Heat is a big issue during break in. When you get a car from the factory the gears are already broken in.

I followed this with my 2012 and had no problems with my new gears. A competent installer will tell you how to break in gears, and if you don't follow the break in procedure they can tell and they won't honor their warranty.

About to get gears installed on my 2014 and I will follow the same procedure.

So what oil do you use for the first 100 miles? And what's it going to cost me to get the oil changed after 100 miles? Cause I'm not doing that myself

Basically, what the installer puts in. And they will put something in that is good for 100 miles.

Put the good stuff in after, with the friction modifier. Again, a good installer will tell you what to do.
