Rough idle after getting gas?

My 2012 Mustang idles rough after I fill up the gas tank.

It kinda sputters and acts like its going to die but never does. This only happens right after i fill up. Does anyone have any idea why its doing this?

I think this happens to all our bodies when we get gas.

I've never remembered to post about this but my 12 PP V6 does the exact same thing. Doesn't matter which gas station I go to. Happens after every fill up. It will slightly surge and seem like it's going to die. But once I drive down the road, it clears up. Maybe it has something to do with the capless fill tube?

Never had that issue. Are you going to shady gas stations or running it on fumes?

No shady stations and I don't run down to fumes. Doesn't matter how much is still in the tank. I fill it all the way up though. A couple clicks past when it stops on it's own.

Never fill a capless gas receptical past the first click off. In the manual, follow it. In fact you should not do that on a cap covered Chevy Truck Either.

Mine does the EXACT same thing...2 or 3 studders after I fill up. I use good gas (tried different octanes - same result) and do not fill past first click. Only lasts a couple of minutes then goes away.

Ok, so I filled up yesterday and stopped after the pump clicked off itself. Cranked the car up and let it idle for a bit. It did not surge or idle low. Very interesting.

Same thing happens to me, but not every time. Maybe 40% of the time. I only get gas from good gas stations like Shell, Chevron, Exxon Mobil. My guess is that it is because of slight differences in octane levels at different gas stations. The ECU may be readjusting spark timing for the different octane after the fill up, hence after a few minutes of driving it goes away. Only a guess, I have no real evidence or information that this is what's happening.

The EcU adjust in the 5.0 is very slight, even more so for the 3.7. On EU relearn it figures out of knocking is occurring under loads )lug, uphill, WOT etc) and pulls timining if it gets knock. After that it pretty much only on watchdog alert for knock sensors. This isnt going to happen on octane change while idling after a fill up.

Things that make such engine issues at idle an sputtering are un-balanced AFR, vacuum leaks etc. It would be interesting if someone this happens to has "ODBII Logging" with the program "Torque". Then we could see whats happening. Best I can guess in my head this has something to do with gas evaporation system that may be part of the "flapper" fuel caps. I need to see the "print" diagrams of the fuel, Evap, PVC, purge valve, and return systems.

Anyone know where I can find these?

My 1st purchase when I got a capless pony was to buy a "Locking gas cap". I've had a 2012 & now a 2014, neither sputter, I never fill after click. See your manual.

Hey, since you said it was after you got gas, you should go get Techron fuel system cleaner for like 5 box at Walmart or somewhere. Fill your car with premium gas and put the cleaner in then drive and see the difference. If it's still rough, you know its not coming from the gas or inner engine area. I'm not a mechanic, but I have had a similar problem like that. And that Techron fixed it
