Gear Install

How hard is it? I'm about to purchase 3.73s and I have access to all the tools needed and excessive amounts of time, is there any real danger to it or is it just annoying to do?

I've never understood exactly what is the danger, as I just can't justify paying the price of another part just for labor.

The danger would be you not doing it right and costing you even more than the labor you would have paid for in the first place. Then you're out of even more mods!

You'll justify it when the gear teeth shear/chip off inside your diff and leave you stranded lol.

It's possible to do it yourself of course, but it takes precision. There's an install video from CJ Pony parts on YouTube you can watch to see what you'd be getting yourself into.

Late Model Restoration has a good Visio as well. I did the change out from 2.73 to 3.55 along with a Torsen diff. It is doable but you need a fairly high mechanical aptitude, and the right tools to measure the backlash and bearing preloads.

Do you have all the tools you need? The gauge for backlash? Do you know how to check backlash? To me this is a project for experienced mechanics. You'll turn your diff into a grenade...

This. If your diff goes boom. You're gonna have a bad time. $360 ish or however much in that ballpark it is around you is well worth the peace of mind.

^^ This was one of those installs i decided i would like to be someone else's problem if anything went wrong lol. The only way to know if its right is to put it all back together, fluid and all, and go for a drive. If it whines, take it all back apart and re adjust. Aint Nobody got time fo that.

Absolutely! I was lucky, cause a friend did it for me at the cost of lunch. Shimming took a looong time. But it came out perfect, no whine at all.

Yeah I see your guys points now, I got a quote of $300 that I'll save up for sometime in the future. Thanks again for keeping my car from blowing up cos I can be cheap sometimes.

Second, that, 300 is a great deal. I got mine done for 335 and felt pretty happy with myself

Gears + tune = greatest possible bang for buck you can get for these cars. I'm a total believer now
