Hello all,
My car (2014 v6) has recently started making quite a loud ticking/clacking sound on cold starts for about 30 seconds, then it goes away. I have read many posts about 2011 and earlier engines having this fixed, but nothing with newer cars that I can find. I will be changing oil tomorrow (looks to be full though) and will get back here if that helps. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks,
The oil change may solve it. How long since the last change? If the filter is at capacity, the oil will have to go through the by-pass valve around the filter element and perhaps that takes a few more seconds to reach pressure?
Alternatively a bad anti-drain back valve in the filter, requiring it to re-fill each time the car is cold started?
Is 91 premium grade where you are? Is your car tuned? If not, maybe try normal unleaded and see if there is any difference. I have had friends who tried to put fuel in their vehicles that they were not tuned for and it made them run poorly.
Not saying this is the case. But its something to be tried. That or maybe some fuel system cleaner in case you picked up some bad gas along the way.
Because this sounds like you might have a light case of engine knock/pinging which can be caused by incorrect octane rating being used or worn spark plugs. Probably not the plugs.
Try maybe some fuel system cleaner and try getting gas somewhere else.
yeah I might have to do that. Its just weird because it only happens on cold starts, and it goes away after like 30 seconds. Not sure how the tune would do that, but then again my knowledge on that isn't all that vast.
And 08mustang.... apparently the forums had other ideas for your post lol.
Another thought is that with the colder weather, it may be taking the oil a bit longer to pump throughout the system and reach pressure. Presumably you are using the recommended 5w-20? Higher viscosity oils may take longer to "pump-up".
If your car has CAM PHASERS that's your problem. I have the same issue with my 08 4.6L Mustang. Doesn't really hurt anything...just noisy. The 3 little pins that hold the 2 parts of the phasers get bent & shear off. Even if you put new phasers it will eventually happen again unless you use cam phaser lockouts. Using lockouts causes you to lose a slight bit of top end power.
