Ah yes, the galvanic corrosion of the aluminum hoods that's been around for about a decade...have the beginnings of it on my hood and trunk lid (both are aluminum). Wish somebody made OE-style steel replacements as I'd much prefer that over the aluminum.

And to think the new F-150s will have all-aluminum bodies...that sounds like a potential disaster.

Only if they haven't changed their painting methods.

And to the OP, hell no that bubbling isn't acceptable. It's a matter of time before they burst and flake off, likely taking bigger chunks of paint with it.

I don't understand how having the car for 6 full business days and they can't even paint it right, and created the same issue I was in there to get fixed. like wtf? this body shop clearly isn't as good as Ford claimed it was.

I was looking at replacement hoods too. seems on cj you can find a cervani hood for like 1000 painted. they've got the cool ram air scoop ones that look like the gt500 and they're made of fiberglass, not aluminum.

I hear it's a common problem I have it on mine also. I was talking to someone who had the same year and he said, he went back 3 times to get it fixed. In the end he told me he went to a body shop to get it fixed and spent 700 and it held up for 2 years. I think I am going to just spend the money and go to a body shop instead of wasting my time going back and forth from the dealer.

yeah if mine keeps messing up I'm just going to buy an aftermarket cervinis hood. I don't think it's made of aluminum and that's what the issue is with this apparently.

It is caused by iron contamination on the aluminum effectively turning the hood into a weak battery. Aluminum would be fine if it was not contaminated.

I took mine in last week with the lip looking like this:

Got the call from the dealer yesterday, Ford is replacing the hood. The tech told me that they see 2-3 of these a week.

Check your decklids also! They're aluminum too and mine has it worse than my hood.

Lame.

My trunklid has already been repainted, the paint was coming off in small blotches.

Again, aluminum by itself is fine, but when it becomes contaminated with iron, it forms a battery using the paint as an electrolyte. Whence the bubbling of the paint. This is called galvanization. This is why you are not seeing issues with the painted aluminum wheels. If aluminum is painted in a sterile environment free from other metals there will be no issues with it.

That being said a guy on another forum photographed an F150 at a car show where the manufacturers were unveiling their products. The F150 already had signs of galvanization.

My hood has bubbled over my right headlight, and my right fender bubbled, and is now flaking off over the wheel well. I would get it painted, but all it takes is me putting two off in the gravel at Academi, and the paint is torn up anyway...

Proving to my fellow racers that the disdain that some GT drivers have for V6 drivers is unfounded, one results archive at a time since 2013.
