I posted on this a few days ago. I tried on a set of hankook ventus v12 evo2 255/45/18 and my technician said that they fit fine, however I drove the car for a few miles and could not stop spinning on slight throttle. Now what they were telling me is that it was most likely the tire compound. So I'm going to try a different brand with the same size and see what happens.

Most people were also saying that 255's were a stretch for our 18x8 wheel and recommended a 245 at most.

That was just my experience with a wider tire so far I'll update on how a different brand works.

If its 8" you could get away with a 255, however I wouldnt. I would just get a 245

255 is a good size for the 9 inch wheel. I agree with the above posts suggesting 245 on the 8 inch.

I ran a 255/45 18 on my 2010 Pony Package wheels, they had 31,000 miles on them when I traded it and were wearing even across.

You could stuff a 255 on an 8" rim, but there's a point of diminishing returns when going wider on any given width of rim.

You'd be better off with a 245 on the 8". 255's would be better on an 8.5" rim.

WIdest tires for 18" rims

For an 8" I wouldn't go more than 245. 255 absolute max, but it will bulge

Don't disagree with any of the above but here's an interesting tidbit.
Looking at Tirerack, at many different mfrs of 255/45ZR18 tires, they show a Rim Width Range of 8-9.5" with a "design rim width." of 8.5".
Yet when you look at the 255/40ZR18, they show a Rim Width Range of 8.5-10" with a "design rim width." of 9".
So it appears that the aspect ratio, 45 vs 40 makes a difference as far as mfrs "design rim width" and acceptable range.
