MPT 50/50 E85 tune

So to handle road course duties, i have been chatting with Ken over at MPT for a month or two now regarding an E85 tune for our V6. I told him i basically wanted something more robust than pump gas, but at ~$10 a gallon that race gas was just not in the budget, which is how we came up with E85. Ken then suggested a 50/50 blend, more than enough cooling / octane, but isn't going to completely wreck the fuel system on track (meaning we wont be using 1/2 tank each session), and i only have to haul ~15-20 gallons of E85 out there instead of like 40 ...

That being said, i am going to be datalogging the car tonight / this week to make sure she is running good for this weekend if there are any questions / comments / concerns people would like or have. I brought my computer and logged the initial start up / drive home and our fuel trims were within 5-7%, which for an Email tune, with blended fuels, on the first revision i would say is pretty damn solid. Looking forward to getting some results on this. BTW, we are on a 100% stock fuel system on her car.

Nice, interested in seeing how it comes out. Not to jump off topic too much but did you ever get my email with the datalog attached?

Was able to get the first round of logs tonight. Assuming this is still the first iteration of the tune i would say it feels pretty strong, the torque bump at ~3500 is noticeable for sure.

The Fueling looks excellent, a stable 12.4 AFR, no knock, fuel trims are all within 5% ... the guys at MPT really do write a solid tune. I've included one of the datalogs we took tonight for those who are curious.

I've attached a virtual dyno of the datalog, and i packed my suitcase of excuses to go along with it: We were both in the car and VD is sensitive to weight, it was slightly uphill, and its the first version of the tune. All that considered, i'd say ~280-290 whp for a car with an Intake, Catless H-pipe and 50/50 E85 aint half bad at all. Looking forward to some revisions.

Hmmm, i wonder if they could do that for a 2001 4.6 also. With straight E85 my car would be getting probably 8mpg in the city, i don't want to imagine what that would be like on a high speed course. Probably more gallons to the mile.

I was going to get one for my car as well, but unfortunately they dont. I offered to guinea pig one for them, but they said they werent comfortable with it; not only because it wasnt on their dyno, but because i would be road racing it. They said they just really didnt feel comfortable with it. I'm going to keep bugging them about it though.

Yeah, i like that they're willing to do a 50/50, because assuming you're not knock limited, you'll actually make more power due to the BTU of the fuel.

I did this math a long time ago on a car debating methanol vs E85, but i'll just stick to the E85 part here:

Methanol: 56,800 BTU/Gal
E85: 81,800 BTU/Gal
Gasoline: 114,600 BTU/Gal

Basically mixing E85 and 93 you get the knock suppression of the E85, with the energy of the 93 @ an effective 98,200 BTU/Gallon. 100% E85 is really quite pointless, most people just dont want to tune for the potential discrepancy when filling up, which i cant blame them for; its hard enough to get some people to do basic maintenance, let alone monitor fuel trims to make sure their blend is still in check. All 100% E85 offers is ease at the pump, and ease on the tuners end.

I really want to try this out of I can. So a 50/50 is the safest ton use you think? What sort of power gain is there in comparison to just 93, 12-20%?

I wanna try it too! I went to mpt's site and its cheaper to get 3 e85 tunes then just one haha. I wonder if they would let us sample its $75 for 3 tunes for e85 and $100 for one tune

Honestly, on a fully bolted car, i would not expect much, 5-10 whp at the most. It should give you a decent torque bump though, like i said, that extra 10 wtq at 3500 rpms above is certainly noticeable.

Also understand that you'll never get a full tank of gas, you'll always just have to kind of guess. If the line is at 1/2, you have to assume theres ~8 gallons in the tank, so you can only add 3 of E85 and 3 of 93 you know, maybe 3.5 of each, but the worst thing that could happen would be to get 3 of one and only 2 or 2.5 of the other.

Yea I can see why they wouldn't feel comfortable with it. Hopefully they can get a 5.0 on their dyno. U should definitely keep bugging them tho. I think a 50/50 would make a good tune to DD on.
