Poor boy axle back cheats

Has anyone with the 3.7L 11-14 taken a drill to the stock muffler? I remember lots of guys doing this while I was in highschool, a couple decades ago. The tip is larger than the muffler exit. I would think drilling some extra holes would relieve some of the restriction and increase the sound. The key would be hole size and number of holes. Also, how far to drill in.

I saw a cut away of the stock muffler today on FB and should have saved it to show what I was thinking about.

Anyone tried this?

Definitely would have to take baffle placement into account. I know that if you put an extra tip on the muffler is sounds like crap lol

there's a few people selling their stock mufflers, and people like rapinator suggesting just throwing them in a dumpster. try to get your hands on some sets of stock exhaust and start experimenting, and show your results. that way if it doesnt work like back in the day (not my day anyway so i wouldnt know) then you can just reconnect your stock exhaust.

Just get a straight pipe! Can be done for about $100 or less. Got mine for $50. Some other friends have gotten it for $80-90

I looked on my other forum and couldn't find it but one of the guys drilled a hole in the inlet pipe of the muffler and using 1" copper pipe made a 3 or 4" long bypass to the other side of the muffler. (V6 OEM's are 3 pass mufflers) it was cheap and effective or so he said. If yours is an automatic try and find some OEM's off a manual as they are differant/louder. I sold mine to Vig last I knew he was looking to get rid of them but it needs to be local or shipping will hurt.

Guess the point was missed. I will be getting new axle backs at some point, hopefully soon, but I love modding and fabricating things in my shop. It wouldn't cost me anything to take a drill and one of my long drill bits and go through the muffler inside the factory tip and punch out a few holes in the factory baffles. From the outside would still look completely stock, but could reduce some of the back pressure and increase sound output. It used to be a common thing, at least around here. Have known lots of guys do this to their cats to have factory appearance on the outside for the emissions inspection visual, but the insides were cleaned out for flow.

Just think it would be a fun experiment. If anyone around SE Texas has a spare factory set they want to throw away, I'd take them off their hands for the project. I don't want to spend any real money on it since it's just a temporary until I get mine ordered.

Just a little hesitant to start drilling until I have replacements. If it sounds like crap, I don't want to be stuck with it for the next couple months.

Just found someone local off facebook with a stock set he's going to let me have cheap, and will hopefully be able to pick up this weekend. Once I get them I'll begin the experimentation process and will do my best to document/record the process & results. Feel free to follow.

At this point it's just for laughs, but if it works out it may be a neat mod for the budget minded, and/or DIY'ers.

To those who post here often, would it be better to start a new thread, or keep it on this one?

Thanks Strange. Anyone who wants to add some thoughts or ideas to the mods before I begin please chime in. I'll take all of them in. I'm also going to do some research on the internal layout and try to make it a some what educated approach so that it can be replicated. I think I may start with minor mods and work my way up recording sound and performance gains as I go. This could prove to provide weeks of fun for me.

If you have a shop why not try and fabricate some straight pipes cheaply? Mufflers are designed to flow a certain way and drilling random holes will probable just sound like an exhaust leak.

The mufflers on these cars also flow really well so there isn't going to be any performance gains as aftermarket mufflers are basically just for sound as they don't add power.

I don't expect any power added by the mods. It's only costing me $30 for the used muffs and if it sounds bad I will note that in my reviews, and people will know for next time. This is all in the name of fun and education.

Once I get the mufflers and lay them out I will draw up a schematic at each point and record the sound. My thought is to drill from the exhaust tip into the center of the muffler through the baffles. Can even be done while still on the car if it works. I will record placement, depth & diameter of the holes for reproduction purposes.

There was actually a guy on here who cut the tips off at the point of the muffler and cut another hole to have dual tips. Said it sounded horrible.

RedPony14, I'm looking forward to hearing how this goes. No pun intended.

I did this with the exhaust on my Kawasaki Vulcan. It actually sounded much better, and the cost was zero. I love these kinds of mods.

And it may sound like crap. I've said that all along. And if it does I'll throw my $30 mufflers away. It all part of the experiment and it's just for fun. If you don't like the idea, that's your right, and please move along. Some of us like challenging ourselves beyond our pocket books. Belittling other people's desire for knowledge is not constructive.

IMO no harm in experimentation. Am I going to rip off my Roush if this set up sounds good......no, but at least it might give me the idea of doing it to my stockers that are sitting in my garage collecting dust anyways. Thumbs OP.

Before drilling, try adding washers to some exaust bolts right before the mufflers. That way you get anexhaust leak before the mufflers. No idea how it will sound on a v8, but i remember subaru legacy owners doing that and getting a deeper sound that supposedly wasnt too obnoxious.

In the spirit of experimenting, which I think is great, I was looking for some pictures that might show the inside passageways of these mufflers. I would think that would be helpful.
Also, don't forget you can plug the holes and try different locations before throwing them away.
The washer thing sounded like it may be worth a try.
